I’m a pretty casual person, so my idea of a capsule wardrobe looks very different from someone with a traditional office job. I love a great pair of jeans, and I’m always on the hunt for the perfect white T-shirt. After spending the last year really paying attention to what I love to wear, these are the pieces I now consider part of my capsule wardrobe. For me, that means a great pair of jeans, a couple of go-to T-shirts, a very soft, cozy sweater, a button-down shirt, and a nice pair of trousers (bonus points if there’s a matching jacket). I’d also include loafers, sneakers, ankle boots, easy pants (I love COS for their elasticated barrel-leg pants), a cute skirt, a leather jacket, a bag in a fun color, and a warm coat for winter. One area I know I still need to work on is accessories. I have very little in that department. It’s similar to my home: I can style the big pieces, but adding things like wallpaper or those extra details that create depth is a skill I’m still learning and want to develop. If you’re thinking about building your own closet, start by considering what your life actually looks like. Do you work in an office? What activities do you love? Which pieces make you feel the most comfortable and most like yourself? There are no wrong answers. Once you figure out what works for you, you can focus on the basics and build from there.
