All traditions aside, if you ruled the world, what do you think is the best approach to opening gifts? Do you like to open gifts in person so reactions can be seen in real time? Or perhaps you prefer privately opening gifts and thanking the giver at another time. 🙏🏻

I could go either way on opening gifts in person or privately, but when it comes to cards, I definitely prefer to read those privately and prefer that others read what I write when I’m not there, too. 💌

Oh what a week! I submitted the first draft of the manuscript for my etiquette book 📚, felt so supported and celebrated by the sweetest friends 💐, taught a business etiquette seminar to a group of emerging leaders at @hillsdalecollege, escaped the DC crowds and snow ❄️, flew to Palm Beach for the weekend 👙, celebrated my husband’s birthday 🥳, and unearthed one of my favorite videos of him from a skating practice session long ago. ⛸️

There are instances where this question is perfectly appropriate, like at a work related function, but even then, I wouldn’t recommend using it as an ice breaker. Instead you might consider openers like “what brings you here/have you been here before/how do you know the host?” first.

In a social or business setting, once the other person brings up work, you can consider that an open door to ask work related questions. For example, if you ask someone how their weekend was, and they say they spent it on a big work project, chances are they are comfortable with some level of conversation about the project since they brought it up.

If you’re the one grieving, it’s okay to let people help. Say “yes” to dinner offers, accept someone’s hand with errands, and don’t feel obligated to “be strong” for everyone else. Your well-being matters, and leaning on others doesn’t make you weak—it makes you human.

If talking about what happened feels too hard, ask a trusted friend or family member to share the news for you. Protecting your energy is not selfish; it’s self-care.

There’s no right or wrong way to grieve. Whether you need to cry, sit in silence, or find moments of distraction, honor what feels right for you. Healing takes time, and it’s okay to take it one step at a time.

Above all, know that you’re not alone. Even in the hardest moments, there are people who care deeply and want to support you—let them.

In all seriousness, the ideal spot for a handbag is not on a table. Only items that are needed for a meal, like plates, cutlery, glasses, and napkins, and decor, like candles, flowers, and other centerpieces, belong there. 🍽️

In a perfect world, restaurants would offer stands, stools, or hooks to safely hold bags during a meal, but when that’s not an option, putting a bag in your lap under your napkin or beside or behind you on our chair are options, too. Depending on the setting, you might consider hanging your bag on the back of your chair, too. 👛

You could say it’s a little extreme, but we love it.💗

We tend to push our limits with how many holiday parties we attend in Washington in December 🥂, then we fly to Maine to be with our big, happy, (and chilly! 🥶) family up north. Then, we go somewhere warm - just the two of us for New Yesr’s. This year, we chose Cabo! 🇲🇽

We’re grateful for all of the merry and bright moments and time with family and friends this season, but there is something about the warm weather, quiet, healthy food, excercise, and spa time that is just what our introverted souls need. 🥰

We use the time to prioritize our marriage and faith, reflect on the last year, and plan and dream about goals for the years to come. 💫🦋

We’re also so grateful for @mcleanrobbins and her team at @lilypondluxury for making all of our best trips possible! ✈️🙏🏻

Regifting isn’t always considered impolite, but here are a few important considerations to keep in mind:

🎁 Don’t regift anything that is super personalized, such as monograms or with names. (I think this goes without needing much explanation 😉)

🎁 Make sure you regift in a different social circle where you are positive the original gifter won’t find out.

🎁 Add a personal touch by including a personal note to the new recipient.
