A photoshoot can really light a fire under your ass. About 2 weeks before the shoot, I still hadn’t upgraded our nightstands (that were admittedly too tiny for the room). Due to procrastination, I didn’t have a million options to choose from that would have arrived here in time. Luckily these from Crate & Barrel were a great scale, were super simple, a mixed material (leather shelf), and checked all the boxes (except vintage, which is what I was waiting for and never really manifested). They are pretty darn great. The plant sculptures are from Lulu and Georgia, designed by Sarah Sherman Samuel (and y’all most of this I paid for FYI). Now admittedly the plants on those sculptures are giving much more of a Palm Beach vibe, which this house (and me) certainly are not, but I really like them!!!

Front porch refresh: I was extremely drawn to these ruffled striped pillows (also available in red/pink which are sooooo fun, all from @anthropologie too). For outdoor pillows, they are extremely plush and mushy (in a good way, not too stiff). I mean, the scalloped sisal pillow is also very cute (but less smooth as you can imagine). Admittedly I was influenced by Gen Z tweens selling out @summerfridays stuff on tik tok. Anyway, I, a 44 year old mom, decided that I too wanted in on how these 12 year olds are staying moist and wrinkle free (LOLOLOLOLOLOL). So I tried the Cloud Dew and lordy it is moisturizing. My historically dry skin loves it and I crave it around 7pm every day when my face has been too exposed to the elements. The fireplace is pretty darn cozy and the TV above it (a Samsung Frame, obviously) gets use on the weekends when the kids dominate the family room with garbage and I fold clothes while binging my own garbage (but we don’t watch TV in here as a couple, strangely, like EVER). The fireplace is from Heat & Glo and is awesome. It works via remote and you can control the heat level and the flame height. It does make the room really warm so I only use it on cold days (or sometimes just for 15 minutes for a mood boost).

It’s official: I dove into the flared leg trend. I tried on like 14 pairs of these y’all and these are hands down the best. So cute, fun, and very flattering IMHO (the proportions of the flare make other parts of your body look more balanced if you are into that).

The blue shirt I’ve had forever from Lululemon (I love the finger holes). The vest is super cute (I love the shoulders coming out farther than my arms) and has big old pockets with zippers for doggy bags and my phone.

This side of the room you’ve probably seen a ton during all my selfie fashion stories. The picture light, light switches, and the mirror are all from Rejuvenation (a large and lovely partner on this project). I only wish that I could magically move the sconce down because the space between the mirror and the sconce is more than I’d like. But it’s so not a big deal so it’s likely going to stay.

That warm taupe shearling chair against the dark blue, with the brass and our pretty rug popping in – it’s just so balanced and cozy. This is probably the best representation of the paint color – it has a lot of depth to it. Also, look closely and you might see an alpaca in the backyard:)

Anybody that cooked in my house was enraged by how we were treating our knives (see on the right) by, you know, shoving them in a drawer with everything else willy nilly. It bugged me too, but just was never on my priority list. So I got to work taking everything out, assessing what I actually use frequently, storing the rest in the pantry or in the long utensil drawer and then of course buying some product to keep things more organized, giving everything a place.

SO. MUCH. BETTER. After searching for the perfect knife holder for a long time (our drawers are only 3″ deep on the inside) I ended up buying this from The Container Store which is what we had at the mountain house, too. The soft cork is way nicer to the knives and more satisfying (and it can hold way more than just 4, but for the shot we didn’t overload it). I also want to give a shout out to my new narrow measuring spoons (top right) that can fit in every single of my herb/spice bottles (whereas the round white ones on the bottom left can’t). TBH I included the white tablespoons in there because they looked cute, but you obviously only need one set and I def opt for the “uglier” narrow measuring spoons every time since I bought them. The knives are from Made In Cookware and they are sooo pretty (and super sharp and heavy, but to be fair are also new). Oh, and I had to use these really shallow drawer dividers that have cross dividers and they are good for us, but most drawers can handle 4″ drawer dividers. Here’s a link to ours. And all our extra knifes are on a magnetic knife block on the pantry counters, in here just what we use frequently (I don’t love kitchen counter clutter, but like WHO DOES?)

I love this shot so much. The chair and ottoman are from Crate & Barrel (and so comfy/cozy and on the lower side FYI). I LOVE its color/texture against the blue wall color so much. The articulating sconce from Rejuvenation is dope, and the art from Bonita Interiors is one of my favorites (and yes, I wish it were centered on that wall but then it would be in front of the light switch that we fully don’t need. Ha). Speaking of things we don’t need – we never use that door. It’s pretty though!!!! Whoops.

The bed, as you might have read, was custom-designed for the guest room (and works so perfectly in there) but a week before the Real Simple shoot the bed we ordered still hadn’t arrived. So we had them assemble this here (and liked it enough to keep it in this room). It’s a Rebecca Atwood tiny print fabric that has mauve, cream, and blue in it. And the arch works so perfectly with the reading sconces. The coverlets are from Parachute and they are GORGOUS. If I could give one note (and I like a note, it needs to be much bigger). We layered two so that it could cover over the pillows without showing the base. They are so pretty and feel like they’ve been washed a million times. Also, that long bolster pillow is the best and that round pillow on top, while being super hard and not exactly a head-resting pillow, looks pretty darn cool.

This one is nice and roomy in the pits (just how I like them) so that it can be thrown over and layer well. It’s my new favorite. It has multiple pockets that close (stop it with the side pockets where things fall out easily) and a little gather to break up the boxiness. Here I’m modeling last year’s Madewell shorts (these are oversized and I roll them up) with some cute 70s-inspired Bombas and my new strangely flattering New Balances (the shape of the shoe when you look down is legit very cute).

This one is a long sleeve shirt dress and that pattern is very forgiving and easy to wear. Would be cute with sneakers or flip-flops, too. The fabric is a bit thicker than cotton (think closer to a thin canvas?) which felt nicely structured.

I thought this windbreaker was really cute, but it’s super pricey so I’d say unless you run frequently in wind/rain it might be a bit too splurgey as a normal jacket. Highly recommend it for those who need more technical gear, though.

I had a social partnership with Varley so I got to try on a bunch of their pieces (they were new to me) and I LOVED THEM. They are a more high-end Madewell meets Vuori – luxe basics in extremely soft fabrics. I’ve worn this brown zippie and coffee-colored leggings many times since I got them. Again, the legging fabric is just SUPER SOFT (rivaling the famous Vuori butter pants I love). My only note to give to the Varley team is less light neutral colors for the leggings – I hate looking naked on the bottom half nor will I buy light-colored leggings (probably because the pigs would ruin the calves immediately). But this chocolate brown is such a pretty color.

I have a sneaking suspicion this might be your favorite bathroom in the house (and there will be no hard feelings:) While I love our primary bath so much (and prefer it for our daily use), this hidden bathroom Is admittedly very special and the colors, patterns, and layers made for such pretty photos (thank you, Kaitlin). It’s a little jewel box of green and pink, full of vintage, and shiny polished nickel. It looks totally original (but fresh and new) and is just sweet as can be. I got to play out a fantasy here (as you should in a guest bath) and every time I walk in I’m like “OH THIS IS WONDERFUL”. All of the polished nickel plumbing fixtures and lighting were selected from Rejuvenation and that shiny pretty metallic popped off the matte tiles and wallpaper so perfectly.

These are the famous Colette pants in denim from Anthropologie that come in a million washes and colors (and multiple people in my life have told me they are their favorite jeans ever). I get the hype now and I can tell you the #1 reason why they are so popular – front square pockets are really really flattering. Also, that blouse is so cute.

This drawer was THE WORST – the glass dishes made it so heavy to pull in and out and so few dishes had matching lids anymore (where do they go??). So I pulled them all out, matched them up, put down the same drawer liner (put wood lubricant on the drawer!!!!!) and reorganized it all.

Now I still love glass containers because I can warm up my soup in microwave if I need to, but I ended up buying more Tupperware (that double as mixing bowls) with lids. The square are a few years old, from Target and the new round ones are from Amazon (and very well reviewed – love them so far).

Turns out that you can always make it feel a little bit like summer, even on a rainy March evening. We opened up our Soake pool (a petite pool in the summer; an XL hot tub in the winter), hung up a few string lights from @loweshomeimprovement for ambiance, and went for a 6 PM swim with the kids. I shopped around, plugged in 4 different string lights and I'm happy to say that I found affordable, WARM WHITE, LED, shatter resistant string lights that look so sweet without going to 'wedding-y.’ These are from @loweshomeimprovement (full disclosure, I had a partnership with them - but I got to choose what i featured). These are globe lights (round and cute) and feel really appropriate to the property. Plus with the amount of action this yard gets during the summer (so many kids, y'all - its like a frat house for 8 and 10 year olds) I didn't want to worry about them breaking since some are lower on the fence line. These pants (Target) and top (Target) are so fun and cute (despite my modeling, the top might be too boxy for yoga, FYI). What you can’t see is my all-time favorite sports bra for day-to-day stuff that I just bought. My issue with sports bras, if you have big boobs, is that nothing is supportive enough for running/jumping UNLESS you wear something so constricting that it’s highly uncomfortable and makes it hard to breathe. This one has an overall compression that I love and the straps don’t cut in more than the actual body of it.
