I've been wanting to retire this glider for some time now... It's dirty and stained with milk and tears and it's so SO ridiculously loud. We've had the most quintessential start to our summer – taking our boat out on the lake and hosting play dates with tiny friends and frolicking on our newly sodded backyard and family strolls through the park at dusk – most of which never makes it to Instagram because we are far too busy enjoying ourselves to remember to take photos. Mila and I have this routine where she'll randomly point up at these photos in her room and tell me that one day we will all go to Paris – "Papa will take us" she says. I ask her who she wants to bring along and she responds with the expected "papa...mama...Polina..." but then continues to list every single relative she can remember and all their pets and all of her stuffed animals. How this random but sweet routine came about – I have no idea. But ever since I first stepped foot in that magical city six years ago I've dreamed of one day returning with my children. Today's news is shocking to say the least but it's also a reminder how often we take things for granted and forget that life doesn't offer guarantees. I suppose most mothers have two sides to them, each one continually battling against the other. One side is determined to capture every fleeting moment, baby’s every first – from the most obvious of milestones like her first steps to those elusive ones that will surely be forgotten unless captured on camera, like the exact way her blonde hair is matted on the back of her head when she wakes up from a nap. Then there is the other side: the one (in my case) completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of photos in my camera roll – 7,138 to be exact. Don't even get me started on my actual camera. Surely being present in the moment is more important than documenting it. Surely those moments are valuable even if – or possibly because – they’re not featured in feeds. What do you think? Which side usually wins for you? And have you also noticed this huge trend on Instagram to capture these unbelievably beautiful yet authentic moments with your little ones? If we share these little squares to inspire others, why then does it feel so strange when someone is inspired by your work to the point of recreating every single detail in their own home? ...several months ago I was scrolling through Instagram when I came across Mila's nursery. Except it wasn't Mila's nursery. All the elements were there but a second look revealed that the house was not ours. This mama has since reached out and was nothing but nice in telling me how she was so inspired by this here space she had to recreate it for her babe. So sweet – right? She didn't have to do that. Yet now every time I come across another photo I can't help but feel strange...especially when I see the dozens of comments praising the design. (Just being honest here.) Am I being petty or is my discomfort valid? They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery but at what point are the lines crossed?
