📚💪🏼 Books and Biceps Review: Fields of Fire by Ryan Steck 💪🏼📚

Hello beautiful friends of HDD. Hope you’re all having a great summer. I had been in a reading rut after finishing Empire of the Damned. (I blame Jay Kristoff for that… if he wasn’t such a talented writer. Anyways, I digress.) After finishing EoTD, I picked up one of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher books that I had started years ago but had not finished. I slugged through the book (it’s never easy to pick up 3/4s of the way through and still be excited about a book, but we were watching the second season of Reacher on Prime so I trodded along). Once done, I was looking for suggestions on a new series. Mindlessly scrolling X before bed one night, I came across a recommendation from one of the accounts I follow, thus I looked into the Matthew Redd series by Ryan Steck. I am so glad I did. As you may know from some of my other reviews, I am a huge fan of the James Reece, Mitch Rapp, and Scot Harvath series, so I was looking for something similar in nature.

Fields of Fire, the first Matthew Redd book, is an action packed, high octane masterpiece worthy of mention among the list above. When I told my wife I found a series which was also on sale on Amazon, I figured I’d have reading material for weeks. I was wrong, and pleasantly surprised. I finished Fields of Fire within days and have already finished Lethal Range, the second book in the series. Fortunately the third book released in June so I had reading material as we were in the hospital (we both did some reading while we were waiting for the induction to do its thing) and now, as we transition the new normal with our bundle of joy.

📚💪🏼Books and Biceps Review: Empire of the Damned by Jay Kirstoff📚💪🏼

Well hello beautiful friends of HDD. It’s been awhile since we last spoke. I had been in a reading rut after finishing Joe Abercrombie’s First Law trilogy on audiobook.

Wow, hard to believe my review of Empire of the Vampire was from December 2022… where has the time gone? I had been counting the days until Empire of the Damned was released, eagerly awaiting to pick up from where the Black Lion had left off. When we received an ARC of EoTD in the mail, I was surprised (thank you my sweet Hello Darkness Darling!) and shocked. My initial reaction was that Jay Kristoff enjoyed my original review so much he wanted me to follow up with EoTD.😉

In my opinion, it’s hard, or nearly impossible, for an author to achieve the same, if not greater, quality for a sequel when the bar has been set so high, as it had been in EoTV. I will be honest, I was a bit reluctant, or hesitant, as the book began — thinking there was no way it would outdo EoTV, that my expectations were too high and that I would just end up disappointed… that couldn’t be further from the truth. Jay Kristoff is a master storyteller in his own right, and I am honored and grateful to have had the chance to read the ARC. The only disappointing thing is the fact I now have to wait a while to see how this tale ends. Empire of the Damned is Damn Epic.

I feel like Not In Love by @alihazelwood is the embodiment of this song. The instant infatuation and physical chemistry in this book is electric, while still taking the reader on a journey to the deepest depths of the characters’ core.

I recorded this while 9 months pregnant so please forgive the heavy breathing and scattered thoughts, but all you need to know is that I couldn’t put this book down — it was such a fun change of pace.
