If you’ve been thinking about tackling a linen closet organization project, let this be your sign that a DIY custom closet makeover does not have to be complicated ✨ Here’s exactly what I did: 1. Removed all of the original builder-grade shelving and patched any holes left behind. 2. Painted the entire closet first so I had a clean blank slate to work with. I highly recommend doing this before installing shelves because it makes everything so much easier. 3. Measured the closet and planned out a simple shelf layout based on what I actually wanted to store here—towels, linens, baskets, and extra household storage. 4. Cut all of the shelves using melamine instead of wood (my number one recommendation for closet shelving and closet storage solutions). Why melamine? Because it’s smoother, easier to wipe clean, and much nicer for linens, baskets, and folded storage. If you have melamine cabinets in your kitchen or bathroom, it’s the same material. 5. Applied edge banding to all exposed edges for a more finished built-in look. The edge banding has adhesive on one side, so you simply place it on the raw edge and use an iron to activate the adhesive and secure it. 6. Installed the shelves and organized everything into zones so every item had a designated home.
