The 2024 Youth Media Award Winners were held this morning.

The Randolph Caldecott Medal is given to the most distinguished American picture book for children. “Big” by Vashti Harrison was the winner.

The John Newbery Medal is given to the most outstanding contribution to children's literature: “The Eyes and the Impossible,” written by Dave Eggers was the winner.

There were five Newberry Medals and four Caldecott Honor books this year. There are several more awards given. To read about these and view all of the winners, check out:

affirmation: i have a growth mindset 🧠 i noticed a lot of negative self talk in my classroom and decided to start weekly affirmations. if a child was open to sharing, we would discuss how they were feeling and why, something that was challenging, etc.

our mindset shapes our day to day experiences and future experiences.

a growth mindset is when we believe that our brain can grow and learn many new things by putting forth effort and using a new strategy when facing a challenge.

by encouraging this type of mindset and coaching a child when confronted with a challenge, they will be more open to face something new and have a passion to learn and grow.

a fixed mindset is opposite. it is the belief that mistakes mean failure rather than an opportunity to learn and grow.

questions:
-what does it mean to grow?
-what is something you did today that exercised your brain?
-what is something new you tried to do today?
-what would you like to become better at?

these read alouds can foster conversation about growth mindset but it is important to discuss it frequently. be open about something that is difficult for you. allowing them to see that we all are growing is important too.

family question: what is something you cannot do “yet” that you would like to work on in 2024?
