Call it what you will, hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate or Hyaluronan. It is a naturally occurring substance found in our bodies. This goo-like substance lubricates joints, muscles, and cells. As we age, the body produces less HA, making the skin look aged, dry, sagging, and wrinkled. When it comes to skincare, hyaluronic acid, or HA, is used for its ability to attract moisture. HA can hold an insane amount of water (like 100x its weight!), making it an highly effective ingredient for skincare products like serums, masks, moisturizers, and lotions that lock in moisture like no other. I hate the fact it’s called an acid (sounds scary) because it doesn’t burn at all. BUT that doesn’t mean it suits all skin types or is meant for all. Just like everything else, it’s a trial and error process to see what works for YOU. Youthful skin retains its resilience and elasticity thanks to its high water content. As you age, you lose the ability to retain HA and the best way to pump it back into the skin is with  HA fillers and/or topical creams and serums. DISCLAIMER: Just know that HA is an instant skin plumper. It’s not a permanent plumper by ANY means but a good, quick fix IF it suits your skin type and you actually see a difference. Don’t use it because you see it all over social media. Use it because it’s actually working. HONEST OPINION: I can definitely say HA makes my skin look plumped with a side of dewy. I use one layer of @neutrogena Hydra Boost Gel Cream because I love the lightweight texture and how fast it absorbs into my skin. Then I follow up with a layer of @ctilburymakeup Magic Cream because I need all the grease I can get. I like lookin’ like  an oil slick. ALTERNATIVE: If you find that hyaluronic acid just doesn’t quite do it for you, try products with glycerin! It’s known for being a very gentle way to bring moisture into your skin.
