Can you believe I passed my 3 month mark as a registered nurse? I’ve learned these past few months how much I truly enjoy my job as a newborn nurse! I only get to care for my patients for a few hours, but the bonds I’ve already created and memories I have experienced have shown me how much I love working on the labor and delivery unit.

At my hospital, we are lucky enough to have both labor and delivery and newborn nurses on the unit. The labor nurses take care of mom and I take care of baby once baby is born. At most hospitals a labor and delivery nurse will take on both job descriptions, but I love solely being able to focus on the newborns and their needs.

In a nutshell, I…
👶🏻 attend deliveries (vaginal and cesarean)
🧸 assign apgars, get weights and measurements
🍼 assist with feedings
👣 get footprints
💊 give meds

After 2-3 hours, most of my patients are transferred to postpartum and then I just wait for a new delivery. Some days are busier than others, but I love have having some downtime at work and then experiencing a whole new delivery all over again. Three months ago I didn’t think I would be where I am now and I’m so grateful 💖
