Inspired by Julie & Julia, I’m cooking my way through Magnolia Table Volumes 1, 2, & 3.

Winter always pulls me back to soup.

There’s something grounding about it. Lighting a candle. Turning on music. Getting every ingredient out before the first burner clicks on. Letting the chopping slow your thoughts and the pot carry the weight once everything’s in.

This is Spinach Tortellini Soup from Magnolia Table, part of my Jeanie Jo & Joanna Project, where I’m cooking my way through Volumes 1, 2, and 3 one recipe at a time.

Even on long, busy days, soup feels like a quiet decision to care. It asks for a little time, a little attention, and then gives it back in warmth. Worth it. Every time.

What’s the soup you always come back to in winter?

Gracefully yours,
🫶🏻 Jeanie Jo

January always asks me to move more gently. After the rush of December, the noise falls away and what’s left is the kitchen, the table, and the small decisions about what to make next. I’ve been sick these last few days with the bug that’s been going around, so this feels like the right moment to catch up on January and what we’ve actually been eating.

The first weekend of the year began the way it always has for me. A nod to New Year traditions and the hope of luck, health, and enough good things to carry us forward. Fried Chicken with Sticky Poppy Seed Jam from Magnolia Table Volume 1, Overnight Black Eyed Peas from Magnolia Table Volume 2, and Dutch Oven Cabbage & Bacon from Magnolia Table Volume 1 all found their way to our table. It felt grounding to start the year with meals that carry meaning, even as the calendar insists everything is new.
As the days unfolded, meals showed up more quietly. Bacon Cheddar Cups from Magnolia Table Volume 2 for easy mornings. Baked Egg Bread Pudding with Spinach, Boursin & Bacon from Magnolia Table Volume 1 that felt like brunch dressed as dinner.
There were brighter moments too. Kick Start Juice from Magnolia Table Volume 3 when I wanted to feel refreshed. Apple Fritters from Magnolia Table Volume 3, eaten warm and mostly standing, because some foods are best enjoyed before you overthink them. And Romaine Salad with Skillet Croutons from Magnolia Table Volume 1.

I’m cooking my way through Magnolia Table Volumes 1, 2, and 3 and calling it the Jeanie Jo & Joanna Project. January hasn’t been about big goals or reinvention. It’s been about nourishment and starting the year with food that holds tradition, memory, and just enough hope. Sometimes that feels like the truest kind of beginning.

Gracefully yours,
Jeanie Jo

I didn’t expect this Magnolia recipe to taste like a hug.

Inspired by Julie and Julia, I’m cooking my way through Magnolia Table Volumes 1, 2, and 3. I’m calling it The Jeanie Jo and Joanna Project. Recipe 125 of 457 is the Creamy Chicken Poblano Soup from Volume 2 and here is how it turned out.

The poblanos softened in the butter and filled the whole kitchen with that warm, earthy smell. The broth turned silky with the cream, the chicken folded in, and suddenly dinner felt comforting without trying too hard. Crispy tortilla chips on top. Fresh cilantro. A little crunch from the radishes. Cozy and a little smoky in the best way.

There is something wonderful about mushrooms sautéed in butter that makes a kitchen feel like it is waking up.

Inspired by Julie and Julia, I’m cooking my way through Magnolia Table Volumes 1, 2, and 3. I’m calling it The Jeanie Jo and Joanna Project. Recipe 123 & 124 of 457 are the Mushroom Gruyère Quiche and the Homemade Tart Shell, and here’s how they turned out.

This was my first time making a tart shell and I will admit it felt a little scary to pour liquid filling into a pan that was not solid. But lifting the tart frame and seeing a clean, perfect edge felt like the best kind of win. The final result was buttery, earthy, and tender in all the right places.

Lemme hear you say this … B-A-N-A-N-A-S

Inspired by Julie & Julia, I’m cooking my way through all three Magnolia Table cookbooks by Joanna Gaines. I’m calling it The Jeanie Jo & Joanna Project. Recipe 115 — Aunt Opal’s Banana Pudding — and here’s how it turned out: Silky custard layered with bananas and vanilla wafers, finished with a golden meringue that tasted like home. Each spoonful felt like the kind of Southern comfort that doesn’t need modernizing — just a little patience and a big heart.

Some recipes don’t need an introduction, just a bag of chips and good company.

Inspired by Julie & Julia, I’m cooking my way through all three Magnolia Table cookbooks by Joanna Gaines. I’m calling it The Jeanie Jo & Joanna Project. Recipes 109 and 110 were Fresh Tomato Salsa & Guacamole; bright, zesty, and gone almost as fast as I made them. The salsa tasted like sunshine, and the guacamole? Creamy, lime-kissed perfection.

POV: You’re making dinner that feels like a hug in a skillet.

Inspired by Julie & Julia, I’m cooking my way through all three Magnolia Table cookbooks by Joanna Gaines. I’m calling it The Jeanie Jo & Joanna Project. Recipe 108 Beef Stroganoff — and here’s how it turned out:

Tender strips of beef, buttery mushrooms, and onions simmered in a creamy sauce that wrapped around every noodle like comfort itself. Rich, savory, and perfectly balanced — the kind of dinner that makes you want seconds and silence all at once.

This Pumpkin Spice Sheet Cake from Magnolia Table, Volume 3 baked up soft and fragrant, the kind of cozy that makes you want to cancel plans and stay home with a fork.

Once cooled, I spread a thick layer of tangy cream cheese frosting over the top and dusted it with a little extra cinnamon and sugar, because restraint has no place in autumn baking.

It started with poached chicken simmering quietly on the stove — the kind of rhythm that makes the kitchen feel alive. The sauce came next: buttery, creamy, and kissed with green chilies. I filled warm homemade flour tortillas, rolled them tight, and baked them until bubbly and golden. On the side, cilantro lime rice brought brightness to every bite, and for dessert — a tres leches cake so tender it practically sighed when sliced.

Recipes 99–103 were Poached Chicken Breast, Sour Cream Chicken Enchiladas, Cilantro Lime Rice, Flour Tortillas, and Tres Leches Cake — a homemade fiesta that turned an ordinary evening into something worth celebrating.

They say happiness can’t be boiled, but I’m not convinced. Because this Country Potato Soup from Magnolia Table, Volume 1 started with bacon crackling, butter melting, and a promise that dinner was about to fix everything.

After the potatoes softened with a bay leaf and thyme, I poured in the cream and blended it smooth with my immersion blender before returning the potatoes to the pot. The result was rich, velvety, and full of quiet comfort.

Inspired by Julie & Julia, I’m cooking my way through all three Magnolia Table cookbooks by Joanna Gaines. I’m calling it The Jeanie Jo & Joanna Project. Recipe 98 of 457 was Country Potato Soup — creamy, cozy, and the definition of home in a bowl.
