Styling a home is one of the hardest things for me. Right now, I consider our home a blank canvas and I’ve been at a standstill. I envision things in my head, but executing it is another story 🤭. I haven’t found what I’m looking for yet. Or it’s that I don’t know what I’m looking for yet.

This built in shelf is above our staircase. The bottom shelf holds all of our scrapbooks and Polaroid guestbooks (from baby showers and birthday parties). The second to last holds thrifted books I used as decoration for someone’s wedding ages ago. I’m not sure where this shelf is going, but I’ll be adding in framed family photos soon.

When designing this closet, I realized I like simplicity best. My contractor built in the drywall shelving + we inserted an Ikea Tarva dresser into a cutout in the wall (also ordered push open hardware from Amazon) + painted it all the same color (Whisper White by @behr).

Olivia and I have been some form of nomadic for the last 5 years. There are so many things I can’t wait to start with her now that we have a place to call home. Just picked up a kids knife set for her to start cooking every meal together.. something I hope we’ll continue until she’s off on her own. Need to look for mommy and me aprons now (never realized the usefulness of aprons until adulthood 🤭)!

I ask her to tell me stories about her day and the ones she dreams up. I ask her to tell stories about people around her and I try to get her to talk about her emotions openly. We talk about the hows and whys so she can develop an understanding instead of the “because I said so.” I’m hoping this helps to build the foundation to our relationship. It’s important to me that she knows I hear her.. that I’m listening.. that I can admit when I’m wrong too. I never knew how much I needed exactly her.

When I look at her, sometimes, I see me. Me when I was little. Me when my greatest childhood joy was hanging out with my cousins. Me when my paternal grandpa showed me what unconditional love meant.. and I never forgot that feeling even after 25 years without him. Or when my mom used to surprise us with small gifts from Sanrio, though we didn’t have much. She reminds me of the good stuff. She brings back a version of me that I thought I lost. This little girl full of light.
