June gloom reset: If you’re feeling behind this summer, this is the reminder that helped me.

Behind only exists if there’s a map you’re supposed to be on. And while all your best friends might have similar maps, it doesn’t mean that it was meant to be yours too.

I was lucky I never had pressure from my parents on what timelines are supposed to look like, but that meant that I often looked at what my friends were doing to make sure I was stying on track or doing the right thing…but then in my late 20s that suddenly meant that I was feeling behind and not on track….but I was following a road map that wasn’t meant to be mine.

The second I stopped trying to hit checkpoints every year on what my life was supposed to look like and how it wasn’t, the panic lessened.

Every year I see so many reasons why it makes sense that things have played out the way they have. Some things still don’t, but that’s not a problem to solve for today.

All I know is the panic of falling behind has dissipated the older I get, not gotten stronger and that’s a relief.

There’s no pace to keep. there’s no one ahead of you. there’s just you, which is the only way life was ever going to happen anyway.

If your closet feels boring or nothing feels like you anymore, this is your sign to try at least one of these.

1. Notice what you reach for on your most confident days.

The outfit you put on when you feel most like yourself and get clear on what it is that makes you feel great in it. Is it the belt that always gives you compliments? The color or silhouette being flattering? Is it the fabric?

Put each of these pieces on an individual clothing rack or section in your closet and these are the hero items that you reach for when you get dressed. It’s like a capsule wardrobe but less boring because it’s about what you feel best in not a sea of neutral tops

2. Go to the tailor. If you fell in love with the print or neckline of a midi dress and that’s why you bought it, but don’t wear it because you hate a midi dress, turn it into a mini!

3. The thing in your closet that excites you but you never wear it because you don’t know if you can pull it off?? Tomorrow your challenge is to get a little un comfy and wear it out of the house anyway. You might end up being obsessed with it on you!

3️⃣ I stopped putting off buying the art and furniture. Just because you’re not in your forever home doesn’t mean you can’t start curating for it now with the pieces that light you up and feel like home.

4️⃣ I stopped being afraid to be “regulars”. It’s not cringey for the barista to recognize you because it’s the 4th time there this week. This is how you build a sense of community.

5️⃣ I stopped letting myself think it’s cringey to bring in playfulness into my wardrobe and things I do. Turns out the secret is in what your 12 year old self would find fun in hobbies and adding a sense of personal style to you closet.

It was the millionth time I had said to my best friend “I feel like I’m on a hamster wheel” everyone is moving forward and I’m not.

This time, I was so bored with what I was hearing. I was so bored with talking about this, with feeling this way.

I did not want this to be the way I saw my life. I did not want “stuck” to be the role I played.

I had made “being behind” a part of my identity that even when things were progressing, I was still competing with a version of myself which was just never going to happen. The version of myself who thought all these things would happen by different ages. I would always be behind if I kept competing with that concept of time.

I have always been a dreamer. The kind of person who asks questions about everything.

And over time, getting curious about how to feel like myself again became more interesting than staying obsessed with why it seemed like everyone else had moved forward while I was standing still.

It was not a magical overnight change. But little by little, I stopped identifying as someone who was spinning in place, even when it still felt like I was.

For some people it’s just a job, but for other people changing careers is change in part of an identity, a routine, a future you’d already half-planned.

The next thing won’t look like the last thing and that is a good thing even though it seems unpredictable right now.

Lean into the thing you’d do if no one paid you, even for an hour a day.

The next chapter could live in the project you keep dismissing because it’s “not serious” or “not realistic”.

I often get asked how to dress casual without looking sloppy. Here are 4 ways I actually achieve the look:

1️⃣ Get things tailored. If you’re wondering why Europeans seem to pull off casual chic so well it’s because going to the tailor and cobbler isn’t just for special occasions - it’s for your day to day too.

The oversized button up you have that looks like you can’t pull it off like the cool girls can? Take it to the tailor. To make an oversized look look chic it needs to be oversized in the right places and it’s not one size fits all, but a tailor can make it custom to you.

2️⃣ Casual looks elevated when you invest in the right fabric. It’s not about what is the softest shirt in your closet, no matter how tempting that is.

From my time as a buyer at Neiman Marcus, what separates polished from sloppy is almost always the fabric. cotton, linen, a good ponte all hold their shape, drape differently, and just feel different when you walk into a room. This is why you have 5 different looks with only white tees if they’re all different fabrics.

3️⃣ Chic doesn’t mean no color. Casual chic isn’t about wearing all neutrals. It’s about knowing where to insert the pop of color because at the end of the day, style means there’s a personal element to it and easiest way to do this is with colors that speak to YOU.

4️⃣ Put a flattering shoe on it. A great shoe is doing more work than you think. To me, the most flattering flat out there is the Chanel slingback - way mare than the ballet flat.

A loafer isn’t just a loafer and a sneaker isn’t just a sneaker. It comes back to proportions. Depending on your height and shoe size different versions of loafers or sneakers will be more flattering.

I’m petite and the chunky New Balance dad sneakers look too extreme on me. As much as it pains me to say this, Golden Goose sneakers are extremely flattering on petite because the insoles have a bit of a lift to them so you get the flattering angle you would with a low heel in a sneaker.

This is why you’ll copy a look from your favorite influencer and it just seem off still.
