Running is essentially a series of single leg hops.
That means one leg must absorb 2-3× bodyweight, stabilize the pelvis, manage pressure through the core and pelvic floor, and then produce force again for the next step.
When single leg strength or control is lacking, the body compensates.
That’s often when runners experience hip or knee pain, low back tightness, or pelvic floor symptoms (something I see frequently in postpartum runners).
This is also why I don’t let postpartum moms just jump straight back into running.
Almost every postpartum client I work with wants to return to running immediately, but before we do that, we rebuild capacity first. We start with controlled single leg strength, then progress to dynamic single leg movements, and THEN return to run. I see where their symptoms are along the way, and we make a decision from there.
Single leg strength is what the body actually needs to tolerate mileage, speed, and fatigue.
I learned this the hard way, so you don’t have to.
