I planted Kimberly Queen ferns around my firepit area. These can take more sun and are low maintenance and non toxic. Kimberly Queen ferns have a more upright leaf/frond I added a few small rocks to the bottom of my planter to help with drainage, then soil, some plant food and the fern. TIP: fill up your planter about 2/3 of the way (about where the top of the fern would be even with the top of the planter), place the fern in the store pot on the soil, fill in the rest of the way around the fern… then twist it side to side a few times, pull the fern straight out , remove from growers pot, gently loosen up roots if needed and place in the soil filled planter- add any extra soil if needed and water.
