What started as a Look of the Day reel turned into an essay on the new jacket style you need to own and the virtue of a shorter knit if you’re wearing a waisted anything. I don’t really mean to ‘lecture’ per se but then I figure maybe you don’t know this stuff and it’s something you might like to know??? Anyway…I like the notion of adding one piece that updates the other bits you already own and in this case, it’s the collarless jacket! I’ve put a bunch in the link across all price points. I love tuxedo shirts and actually tuxedo anything, always have. I saw this shirt last week on Zara and it was expensive for Zara (but it did look like good quality and it's silk so...). I love this style of shirt worn classically with a great sharp shouldered tuxedo blazer and tailored pant but equally, it can look great with a wide leg pant and very sexy opened up with a pair of jeans, a heel and a great earring. I like to dress up in a relaxed way for dinner on resorts (I mostly just wear a swimsuit and a tee during the day so I like to make an effort for the night!). I really love this heavy satin tee and pant from Oroton. I love the ease of the shapes and also the versatility- you could easily do the pant with a cotton tank during the day and switch in the satin tee for night along with a nice earring and bag!

Here's a campaign for Oroton I styled recently. I love all this stuff and will be ordering much of much of it to the dismay of my bank balance!!! The reason why I'm holding off is that I can't decide - it's all fab! I love how graphic and clean the palette is of red black and white. Onset attire prerequisites are that they are comfortable and easy to move in ! This definitely applies here! The shirt is a most flattering to Al skin tones blue and the barrel jean shape is super comfortable as is the oversized shirt/jacket/shacket!
Great for casual work or weekends. The jeans you can obviously dress up or down. I do enjoy the odd double denim moment!

Here’s a quick way to replicate a Chanel look without spending all the $$$$!
I saw this look in a recent Chanel show and thought that the zip knit reminded me of those knits that (mostly older) men wear and I could try using a men’s knit to get that look. Turns out that the men’s ones are often in quite a heavy fleece fabric so hard to tuck but I found this fine merino version that did the trick!

I posted a similar outfit the other day but what I wanted to talk about is that now that the mornings are colder I need that bit of extra warmth for those chillier couple of hours and then I don’t need it so here’s where my point is coming to…I’ve been adding warmth and pops of colour with my knitwear (rather than an actual scarf). You can wrap around your neck or across your shoulders or semi apron style around your waist- it all works and then you can just shove the knit into your bag once it heats up! Sometimes I tie the knit to my bag which is quite good too! Make use of those knits you have in your drawers!! Obviously not too bulky. Mine is a cashmere crew from Uniqlo.

Anna Quan does great event and workwear. You can buy a selection of it at David Jones otherwise your only option to purchase is on line, well until recently. Now if you’re Sydney based (or planning on visiting) you can make a showroom appointment and try on the pieces IRL! I tried a few. Love the satin strapless dress which also comes in black, brown and ivory. Makes a perfect party gown or would make fab bridesmaids (or bride!) dresses. The suits I tried are in a fine wool and have a nice sharp shoulder line.
If you don’t love purchasing on line without actually touching/feeling, then consider a showroom appointment!

I was planning on doing a Look of the Day but using classics and then had to do a bit of a spiel on the virtues of classic pieces and their longevity. I could make a very long list of classics but just discussed a handful here (perhaps another reel down the track).

If you don’t yet own any of these then perhaps consider including them in your wardrobe line up. They not ‘exciting’ but they’re great basics that will serve you well for many a year. It doesn’t need to be a Burberry Trench or a Charvet shirt, there are great options at reasonable price points. Just make sure the fabric and make is good and they should last !

I feel like skivvies under shirts or crew knits is a modern and easy update. I recall chic women (yes @nancypilcher I’m talking about you!) in the 80’s would do this and it looked fabulous then and great now! It’s such an easy update and now that it’s getting cooler, adds a layer of warmth (and as adopted by the great late Karl Lagerfeld, hides an aging neck!!). I love it tucked into pleat front waisted pants and cream and black always looks sharp and chic. All links below.

I enjoy adding a pop of colour on occasion to a black and white combination. I’ve also been using my crew or v neck knits lately as scarves or belts as a way just to add another layer or an extra colour to the mix.

I really like wearing bright pops of colour with neutrals. All of this is from Oroton. The knits are a very fine and super soft merino silk blend- the sky blue looks great with the red v neck over and all that colour is balanced out with the neutral tan colour wool pants - waisted with front pleats and narrowing slightly at the ankle. This is new season and a good weight for all the in between weather times. Warm it up with a jacket or coat over the top. (There is a matching jacket in the same fabric at Oroton)

It’s nice to be invited out to an event that requires one to dress up. This Pandora Wonders event (showcasing very cute new pieces co-created by artist Harry Lambert) At Grandfathers in Sydney had a theme ( Grotto Glamour which I interpreted as something pearly) so I decided to wear gorgeous heavy satin creamy coloured shift and pearl encrusted mesh evening bag both from Oroton (the gold mesh is out of stock currently fyi however coming back into stock very soon, and the silver mesh will drop in September). As I feel the cold, I wore a black double breasted coat which gave the whole look a dandy feel. I felt pretty chic and fabulous!

As much as I would love to own an actual Chanel jacket, I have many other things I need to spend my money on right now and it’s an expense I most definitely cannot justify. However, I really love a tweedy textured frayed jacket right now and the look is really good, especially when paired to something way more casual like jeans. The men’s shows in Paris that have just finished have provided me with loads of ideas to incorporate into my own dressing and dressing at large. The new men’s Celine show was incredible and just so many styling ideas. This one is very simply just tying some thin leather cord (or a leather rolled belt) around the waist of a coat or jacket. It just gives a great modern update that is just so easy and simple. Some jacket and belt options below or just use what you have or buy some boot strapping from a shoe repair man!

If you’re hunting for something to wear to a ball or wedding then Leo Lin is a very good place to look. I love how sophisticated this grey dress with black sequined flower is. This one might be my fave as it’s glam but understated. But if you want some colour and volume, Leo Lin has got that in spades. I also like that there’s a warm option as so often as a wedding guest you hit a certain point in the evening where you’re cold and borrowing someone’s jacket just doesn’t really suit the look!

On set today and it was COLD!! So I decided to wear two jackets which I was able to do due to the roominess of the overcoat. I’ve been getting alot of wear out of all of these pieces in very different combinations of late. The underneath jacket is super comfy and very warm so great for the freezing studio today and equally great at home, over active wear or just lounging around. The coat is in a light cashmere so it’s also very comfortable to wear and the width of the coat (it’s kinda like a long version of a peacoat) allows for me to layer with bulky knits or in this case, a jacket.

Here’s my look of the day- I first saw this jacket months ago at a press showing and have wanted it ever since so when it went on sale I was pretty excited and it still is!
I like it best with a narrower leg line (that ruffled edge would be too much with a wider leg) so I’ve paired with my straight leg jeans (in a rigid denim - always my preference!!).

It's not always possible but I will try to do nearly every look of the day as I wear them (Unless it's a working form home trackie day!). One of my 'staples' is white jeans, I have a few different shapes and they feel fresh and easy to wear and obviously work with every colour combination. These jeans are from Uniqlo, coat from Friends with Frank, this chocolate knit is from Theory (but I purchased this last year when no one was doing chocolate however there are loads around and I've included other brands in the link). I am slightly tired of wearing trainers and am trying to decide on which loafer in chocolate to purchase _ I like them both!

I really like adding life to neutrals by adding pops of colour with accessories. This incredible bag is from Among Equals which is a non profit company that helps women in New Guinea create these traditional woven bags and get paid for them! The colours are amazing! I was particularly excited to be invited to a Mad Men themed party this weekend. I mean, there are very few TV shows or movies for that matter that have been as meticulously designed as this show. As an interiors stylist once told me, she liked to watch it with the sound off (not because the dialogue was bad as it wasn’t, it was fab, but because she could just take in all the beauty better without the distraction of sound - yes @megan_morton I’m speaking of you!!). I loved all the seasons and their era interpretations but Betty Draper season one was pretty incredible. Remember her riding outfit!!! This look is from @leolin_official

Some fur coats look tacky and fake but this one doesn’t look either (although I have no idea what animal this would be if it were real!). I recall my mother had a real one not dissimilar to this in the early 70’s which was amazing (I think it was Oscar de la Renta) that I always coveted and I don’t have it now because our family home and all its contents burnt down in the bushfires of 83, maybe that’s a story for another time! Anyway, it does remind me of that one, similar length and shape too. I love how they’ve (Zara) have styled it with flat over the knee boots but I happened to be wearing wide white jeans which I think it also works well. It’s a good weight for our winter and it’s extra without being tacky. If you’re after a fun and functional coat, consider this one.

This coat is the perfect evening coat. You can wear as a tuxedo coat with pants or denim or over a gown for getting to the party. It has a great shoulder line and shaped through the body and perfect length. It solves the dilemma of looking chic but not freezing to death in an evening ensemble.
