Hi! Hello! Hey there! It's me. I'm back after, what's coming up on the three year anniversary, my accidental and absolute hiatus where I let the blog and all its bits be ravaged by neglect and the inevitability of time. I decided to take an actual month long hiatus from blogging and social media to let my brain rest. But now, I'm back... probably ...with consistency, posts, opinions, and grace because I will flounder.

First post of the new year and being better at this again: 11...ish Anthems in a Spotify Playlist for 2023!

Music is a huge part of my life. So, this year, I made a playlist to keep me in check and also remind me it’s okay to be the bummer that I authentically am. Because I truly would not have a career or passion or drive without the depression, anxiety, abuse, and neurodivergence that make up the trauma responses I call my personality.

There's a fun little digression into nerdiness too. But find the playlist and addendum because I'm not completely delusional about my 2023 potential on the blog: https://onthebl.org/2023/02/01/11-ish-anthems-in-a-spotify-playlist-for-2023/

Writing has always been the easiest way for me to explain all the feelings I find so difficult. I trend toward verbosity, but more often than not, I say nothing at all. I don't feel like I belong to the same world everyone else does. So I watch. I write. I keep it to myself.

Without any context at all, I decided to say the things I wish I could say on the blog today. https://onthebl.org/2022/10/03/11-phrases-i-wish-i-could-say/

Yeah, yeah.
It's 1:45 in the morning.
I'm wide awake. Toggling between two tabs on my computer.
One is my job-job.
The other is a piece about a tree in the woods near my childhood home.
I realized it's been over thirteen YEARS since the first time he raped me and eleven since the last. Life passes so quickly sometimes that the actual amount between a once upon a time in our lives and now is quite a bit. Yet some things will always feel like yesterday, and some things will feel like distant memories almost instantly.
Scrolling through the plethora of pictures, I came across this one, taken in the fall for a piece I'd been writing on how I wasn't going to get married, and at 30 I'm cool with that, but I still like white dresses and bouquets of flowers.... It feels like an absolute lifetime ago because for the first time in almost 31 years, that's not something I'm saying. I still like white dresses and bouquets of flowers, but marriage is on the table in a distant future kind of way.
I'm just here in my thoughts about how the woods has always been my happy place, but it's also been a place of literal waking nightmares. Yet I've been able to somehow maintain that joy in spite of such stark memories. A landscape which should inspire fear will always bestow calm... and a place for photoshoots. https://liketk.it/3wLdm @liketoknow.it #liketkit
AMAZON I've been exceptionally terrible at writing reviews for the books I've read over the last two years. My book closet—where I keep the read and to-be-read books—had become quite cluttered with the stacks of books I'd read and done nothing with. So I'm doing a handful of reading lists to clear out my book closet and give myself a fresh start. I've organized them ish. These are books that are either directly political or have political ramifications. For once, I have a list of books that are actually exceptionally good. Not a turd in the bunch. Some are more memorable than others, but they're all very good and worth your time. So have at it: https://onthebl.org/2022/01/18/a-reading-list-with-political-ramifications/

Life has taught me to keep people at a distance, to not trust, to not depend, to not open myself up. People have seldomly shown themselves to be worthy of confidence, and so I live a guarded life, involving as few people as possible and relying on others with extreme rarity. As a writer, I have found a nuanced balance between allowing people into the darkest recesses of my past and psyche while simultaneously never letting anyone in or forming attachments. I have subconsciously programmed my existence to avoid actions and circumstances that encourage and form intimacy between myself and another human. I recently started ruminating on these things because someone came into my life, who makes me question the way I live my life and how guarded I am. She simply does not allow the self-contained complacency I have grown accustomed to in my relationships. For the first time in a very long time, I am being challenged to crack open my soul and live authentically and the terrifying bit is that I want to allow my vulnerabilities to be seen and create space for the possibilities of more. Part of that is admitting and actively working on all the ways I have isolated myself from people who have and do show up for me, so here is a list of eleven things I avoid: https://onthebl.org/2022/01/03/11-tidbits-of-life-i-avoid-at-all-costs/

On a vastly different note, I really love the back of this dress. And I should wear a flower crown again sometime soon.

Since I've been so bad at posting book reviews this past year.... or so. Here's a list of books I would call easy reads to fill up your fall reading list. Yes, I am calling this a fall reading list accompanied by a picture of me by a pool in a bikini. To be fair, my season of autumnal delight looks a lot different than the Insta worthy pictures you'll find under all those quippy harvest, pumpkin spice, apple picking, trick or treating hashtags because I live in Houston. Other than Rodeo, I haven't been to a big concert in almost nine years. I went to see Kane Brown, Jordan Davis, and Restless Road. Everyone was fantastic.

I'm not a huge fan of concerts. I love music. I love theater. But I don't necessarily like concerts the way most people like concerts. If I'm going to a concert, I want something intimate and solely centered around the music in the way of super awesome acoustics with people sitting quietly appreciating the musicality of it all. I enjoy hearing the talent, the years of hard work, the passion come through the instrumentation and vocals. I love small concerts, symphonies, and orchestras.

Kane Brown put on a wonderful show. It's not something I would've picked out since it was a stadium show, but I very much enjoyed floor seats. He really has a wonderful voice, a way of connecting with the audience, and bringing an incredible energy. It also gave me a reason to get in touch with my country roots... They're there. Hidden deeeeeeep down. But they do exist. I don't post them much, but I have a decent amount of boots and wear them a lot. I also have a strong hat obsession. I'm not much in the way of bell bottoms; after all the compliments I got from y'all and at the concert, they may be added into my wardrobe more significantly.

The Secret Lives of Baba Segi's Wives by Lọlá Shónẹ́yìn tackles universal themes grace and humor by exploring the interior lives of four Nigerian women through the secrets they keep in a conservative, polygamist family. I really loved this book even though it felt like reading it was akin to watching an imminent trainwreck, but in a fun way.

When Bolanle, wife number four, arrives, her education becomes a hindrance and ultimately leads to the reveal of a dark family secret. Each wife has her own story, past, and personality contributing to the omnipresent sexual politics within the house. Humanizing cruelty through incredible narrative and attention to detail.  Shónẹ́yìn ultimately depicts how vicious and cyclical the patriarchy’s determination is to confine and silence strong, resilient women, as they/we all are in unique ways.

I was entranced by the craft that went into Shónẹ́yìn's debut novel. Nuanced, serious, yet funny. It balanced popular success with aspects of literary fiction, making entirely approachable but still elegant. Read the full review at:

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! I've been meaning to write this post for awhile, and this seemed like a great day to post it.

Two and a half months ago I took my first road trip since the pandemic. Twenty hours in the car, I arrived at the Grand Canyon's South Rim.

I hadn't been camping since I was 15, and that was in Iowa and 20 minutes from my bed. Not only was I camping the Grand Canyon, I was doing it alone. I had zero expectations other than I knew I wanted to hike in the Canyon.

As I drove through Arizona, the sun rose, illuminating an entirely breath-taking landscape of plateaus, mountains, plains, and wildlife. I knew would use my time to search for the stories of the people who lived in and around the Canyon for thousands of years before white people arrived to fuck shit up. The trip that was meant to center myself, connect with nature, and escape life's hustle created a subtle yet distinct shift in my soul.

Head to my blog post to find a highlight reel of things I learned at the Canyon. There will be a post about my trip in the near[ish] future. https://onthebl.org/2021/10/11/11-things-i-learned-camping-the-grand-canyon/

Happy 168th Homecoming to Cornell College. I doubt they've had 168 homecoming celebrations. Did homecoming even exist in 1853? (Cornell University sure didn't. Ha! We're the older, smaller, and better (not a subjective opinion, at all) cousin—literally—in Iowa. Easily confusable, I know.) As a die-hard alum, I filled my house with flowers in school colors in honor of homecoming.

I say this with all the love in my heart: Cornell College is a very strange place. With only 1,200 students, you can and will find your Niche of Nerd; we even had some token Republicans on campus.

I found my people at Cornell. It brought the saddest, hardest, and happiest years of my life. I found my best friend. My first semester freshman year, I fell in love; I fell for him. Actually, I fell on him. Then I learned the pain of heartbreak, and managed to keep him as a partner.

I earned an education in life, love, relationships, and of course the classroom. I grew up at Cornell. I found home and family on the campus that was everything I didn't want and all the things I needed. It was the first place I felt whole. A space that gave me acceptance, love, family, friends, pain, recovery, poverty, plenty, adventure, respect, happiness, anger, truth, and peer review journals.

This homecoming was special, and I was sad to miss it. My partner belonged to Mu Lambda Sigma, known as Milts, and my corsage is their colors. As any and all Milts will tell you without provocation, they are the oldest organization on campus. I love them because they gave me a safe space to reset my inner compass and learn to trust men. They were my favorite people on campus, and I miss them so much it hurts sometimes.

Happy Homecoming. I miss the good times and am thankful for the bad. Read more at: https://onthebl.org/2021/10/10/happy-168th-homecoming-cornell-college/ or through the link in my bio!

I need your help! Which trip should I write about first?
•Grand Canyon
•Santa Fe
•Iowa/Minnesota
•Harry Potter World/Disney World

It's been two months since my trip to the Grand Canyon and Santa Fe. A little over a month since Iowa/Minnesota. Only a week and a half since I got back from Orlando.

I love traveling, but I'm absolute rubbish at writing and posting about my travels even though it brings me joy to create the content and memories. I'll write about all of them, I just can't decide which to do first.

Orlando seems like a good place to start because the colors are more summery, and I can transition into more fall vibes with Grand Canyon and Santa Fe pictures. But then again, should I do them in chronological order? Decisions, decisions. I can be so indecisive sometimes, so please tell me what to do!

This was taken at the resort in Orlando. I loved all the tropical vibes. Definitely had people cheering me on from the water taxi as I took tripod pictures of myself. When you travel alone, you get good at making due.

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, known as Orange Shirt Day, to honor the children who were lost and survived residential schools. As of this year in Canada, it’s a federally observed holiday.

Residential schools were a cultural genocide on Natives, many did not live to tell the tales of physical, emotional, psychological, and sexual abuse suffered at these schools that were often federally funded and run by religious organizations. In the US, the first school for colonizing, "educating," Natives was created in 1634, forming a legacy lasting until 2007, though some remain under Native control. Residential schools rose to horrifying numbers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Children were stolen from their families, forced to leave their culture, language, and heritage behind to assimilate into "American" society. The saying, "Kill the Indian, Save the Man" became a popular and lasting argument for Native genocide after Richard Henry Pratt coined the motto in an 1892 speech. In Canada more than 150,000 Native children were forced into residential schools between 1870 and 1997; many never returned. 6,509 children’s remains have been discovered, but that number continues to rise as more unmarked graves are found. The US hasn’t made a similar commitment to truth and reconciliation, so the extent is unknown, but the numbers are more appalling.

Today is a day to remember those children lost and surviving, their families and communities. Today is a day for learning, growing, healing. I wanted to write a blog post, but I am so overcome with grief from research that I couldn't bring myself to do so.

I’m sharing this brief post to support, honor, and remember. I wear orange for Phyllis Webstad and the orange shirt was stolen from her at a residential school.

Let's play a game of Was It Worth It?

Swipe to the end to see what unexpected souvenir I brought home because I was over confident and wanted these pictures....

My answer is YES! Totally worth it. I love these pictures, and the splinters hardly hurt. I didn't even notice these in my upper thigh until last night (three days later). I pulled the ones in my butt cheek out immediately because I knew those were there. I couldn't pass up this super cool palm tree at my Universal resort. I had a day to just enjoy the pool and makeshift beach while @amandabeefloral was at her conference.

Get a tripod! If you travel alone, buy a tiny tripod that fits in your purse and remote so you can have your own epic travel pictures. I'm still practicing. But not half bad!

Tartan is inextricably linked to Scotland for people around the world, but its history doesn't start in Scotland at all, but in China's Tarim Basin in 1200 BC. Fiona Macdonald combines history and fashion in this teeny book focused on an iconic cultural and national symbol. Honestly, I have a fairly mixed review on this one. The writing is rudimentary, but the amount of research and information included is quite comprehensive, filled with first and secondary sources, anecdotes, history, listicles, and so much more. My full review can be found at: https://onthebl.org/2021/09/21/scottish-tartan-and-highland-dress-by-fiona-macdonald/ or through the link in my bio!

In August, I went to Minnesota's Renaissance Faire and it happened to be the weekend of the Scottish Highlands, so of course I threw on a tartan shawl and popped this book in my pouch. Really, I walked around all day with this on my hip. I had an absolute blast and felt quite fierce in my outfit.

I've spent a lifetime figuring out how to look as good as I possibly can while spending as little as I possibly can. I've learned it's best to go cheap on some things [press-on nails] and splurge a little on others [find a good tailor]. I'm nowhere near where I hoped I'd be financially ten years ago or even two years ago. I'm lucky I have a partner to share the burden and supports that I'm doing things that make me happy. Until I'm independently wealthy—if that ever happens, but I can hope—, I'm going to continue practicing my budget-friendly bougieness in all these ways and more. But I've learned the bougiest thing I can be is happy. You can find some of my top tricks to being bougie on a budget here: https://onthebl.org/2021/09/20/11-ways-to-be-bougie-on-a-budget/ or through the link in my bio!

Taking pictures of nails is so hard. To the people who do it, I'm incredibly jealous. This took way too many tries to get. I am a recent convert to press-on nails. They're my go-to when I don't want to take the time and effort to paint my own nails or spend the money at a salon. They're quick, they're easy, and they can look classy as hell when done right.

Most people look forward to because they can sit outside and enjoy the sun. Texans look forward to fall because we can finally sit outside and enjoy the sun.

September is in full swing, and fall arrives in three days. It's starting to cool off, so I can enjoy sitting on a patio with good food and great company without sweating my butt off. I love spending Sundays in Rice Village at the Farmer's Market, walking around and grabbing yummy food. Sometimes I bring a dog with so my COVID babies can get used to some social interactions.

Fall vibes in Texas are not at all burnt oranges, burgandies, yellows, and all those amazing colors. We're still very green. Whether you live in fall paradise or the south, like me, what's your favorite thing about fall? Mine is apple cider.

With a sense of humor, Kathy Benjamin prepares her readers for the one completely unavoidable consequence of living: death. Like it or not, death comes for us all. Unfortunately for us, we can't control what happens once we're gone, but with a little bit of preparedness, we can sure try. Death is one of those topics people shy away from, which causes a lot of heartache and mess once they're gone, so if you do it for no one else, do it for me and write your damn will. I've never felt a need to avoid talking about death for a lot of reasons including but not limited to: I like making people uncomfortable, it's unavoidable, dark humor is my jam, and I hate unknowns. Kathy Benjamin, I feel, falls in my camp because she tackles all the deathly facets of living with a sense of humor, information, and creativity in her book It's Your Funeral from Quirk. In the vein of being behind on posting. I'm finally getting around to writing about the unique names I chose for my litter of rescue babies... a year and a half late. As the owner of a unique name with meaning, I wanted to bestow big names on the little paws, even if they didn't keep those names forever. In naming, I have always looked to history and literature for inspiration. I can't say my partner did the same when he named his half, but they're all incredibly cute none-the-less. Of the six babies in my house, I named the three girls and @dpennington93 named the three boys. Go read the blog post to see how I still managed to turn the boys' non-literary names into literary names at: https://onthebl.org/2021/09/15/literary-puppies-big-names-to-live-up-to/ or through the link in my bio!!!

These pictures were as chaotic as they look. Eight ten-week-old puppies running in all directions while on their leashes makes it difficult to take a picture where everyone looks at the camera, but these are authentic to the fun and chaos. I miss how cute, little, and snuggly they were, but my six are my world and a bit bigger now.
