Joan Didion loved Tulum, & her Celine sunglasses, & good times with good people.

Months ago I visited the land she loved. I discovered independent brands like Umbral. I ate, & danced, & felt, & wrote.

Months later, eager estate-sale goers purchased an array of Didion's personal items at STAIR Galleries. Auctioned to benefit the funding of girls’ scholarships. Some perhaps sourced in the city housed in the state the writer would name her daughter after & make (one of) her homes in.

The items below are inspired by STAIR’s listings of items such as
carved mahogany ladderback armchairs, an unattributed painting titled Persian School: Woman With a Fan, decanters, a simple Baccarat ice bucket, assorted colored glass articles, & Robert Grahm’s ‘moca torso’ sculpture.

It’s the second of my Joan Didion estate sale posts, inspired by the writer’s personal home decor & writing items (one and the same in some ways) recently auctioned by STAIR.

This time around you can shop her infamous tortoise shell Céline shades, tools for literal gas lighting (or just like, living room ambiance creation), a Richard Serra catalogue inspired by “Malcolm X” a painting of Serra’s collected by Didion), floral Victorian chairs that make a bedroom a space, & more perfect objects to make home look & feel like a writer’s retreat or vacation.

WWJD | What would Joan do?

She’d escape to a lowkey spot in Latin America to write prose so good that she’d end up garnering fans who never even read her work.

No reading shame here though. Just a continuation of curated lifestyle goods inspired by the recent Joan Didion estate sale at Hudson’s Stair Galleries. (& a denim selection that fits like the perfect, slightly grunge, boot cut jeans).
