Inspired by An American Icon: the Collection of Joan Didion (pt. 1) Joan Didion loved Tulum, & her Celine sunglasses, & good times with good people. Months ago I visited the land she loved. I discovered independent brands like Umbral. I ate, & danced, & felt, & wrote. Months later, eager estate-sale goers purchased an array of Didion's personal items at STAIR Galleries. Auctioned to benefit the funding of girls’ scholarships. Some perhaps sourced in the city housed in the state the writer would name her daughter after & make (one of) her homes in. The items below are inspired by STAIR’s listings of items such as carved mahogany ladderback armchairs, an unattributed painting titled Persian School: Woman With a Fan, decanters, a simple Baccarat ice bucket, assorted colored glass articles, & Robert Grahm’s ‘moca torso’ sculpture.
