Well guys… it finally happened, I spilled coffee on my white sofa 😭 I’m not gonna lie I was stressed for a minute but I immediately got out my green machine and started working on it. End to end the whole thing only took around 30 minutes, which is not bad! Did I learn my lesson? Am I going to stop drinking coffee on this couch? Am I going to avoid white furniture in the future? Overwhelmed, over-budget, and overcommitted in the middle of your renovation? Don’t make the same mistakes I did!

If you’re experiencing one or all of these things you may find yourself just going with the easiest or least expensive option so you can keep pushing forward. You may also just not realize that there are better options out there! This is what happened to me when I completely remodeled my first home while also planning a wedding.

While I was overall happy with how the remodel turned out, there are so many things that, now that I’ve taken time to think about it (and become a full time interior designer!), I wish I had done differently.

Instead of a Schluter edge to cover up my shower niche edges I would have chosen a coordinating trim piece or used the same tile and mitered the edges for a much prettier look. The Schluter edge was recommended by my contractor and I had no idea there were even other options at the time!

I was also overwhelmed picking out tiles for 4 bathrooms so I went with these which match but aren’t very interesting. I wish I had chosen smaller tiles for the floor or maybe a rectangle shape for the walls to add more contrast.

I had no idea what to do for the mirror so I went with this large piece which matches the gold tones in the rest of the bathroom great but is SO boring. I wish I had chosen two individual mirrors with a little more detail.

As I’ve moved into the interior design world full time I’ve learned how every little detail and decision can make such a big impact on the overall project. My advice to you - truly think through as much as you can BEFORE hiring a contractor and putting that time pressure on yourself.

And, if you need help with those decisions, it’s always better to hire someone who can guide you in the right direction from the beginning than to regret it later on.

What makes this Kitchen Nook before and after so striking?

Scale: the table and chairs in the before picture are too small for the space, leaving too much extra room on either side of the bench

Warmth: the stark white paint color in the before picture makes this sunny space feel sterile; choosing a warmer paint color helps make the space feel more cozy

Have you ever been disappointed when your custom curtains don’t look like the ones on the website or Instagram?

Even when you make the investment in good quality and follow the “online measuring guide” there are other factors you need to consider to get the look you want.

#1 is the fullness ratio. To get full looking Instagram-worthy drapes you need to account for more than just the width of the window.

First, measure the width of the window and add 8-12” on either side to get the rod length. Extending the rod past the window is a MUST. In this room the window is 46” so adding 12” to either side gets me a rod length of 70”.

Next, multiply the rod length by 1.4 to get the total width (for me that’s 98”). Then divide this number by 2 to get the individual panel width (for me that’s 49”).

1.4 is my ideal fullness ratio to get the look above, but you can adjust for your own preferences!

#2 is getting the curtain length right. You want the bottom of the curtain to just kiss the ground for a perfectly tailored look. To do this measure from the ground all the way to the ceiling (or crown moulding) and subtract around 2 inches to account for the rod and rings (this varies - measure your own rod and rings to subtract the correct amount!).

#3 is memory shaping. I like to order all of my curtains with memory shaping so they have that nice pleated look BUT I make sure to steam them when I get them so there are no harsh lines or wrinkles)
