Kitchen + nook

By suzannahstanley

I’m so grateful to live in the neighborhood I grew up in, and I walked past this house a million times before we found out we might be able to buy it and make it ours. My mom took me here once when I was a kid, some neighborhood organization thing, and I remember sitting in this breakfast nook and appreciating the built-ins.😂🤓 And now I get to store my vases and cookbooks and pretty cocktail glasses here.

(What I didn’t realize back then was that the glass doors were not original…! I’m guessing someone replaced them in the 80s and did the best they could, but I just try not to look at them too closely. Still so cute!)
Am I ridiculous for caring this much about my soap bottles? Yes. 🙈 But I think this is called self actualization… when everything else in your life is going well, you can focus on improving the little details. The timeless Nancy Meyers vibes I’m going for in here now make me feel better than the honestly Target and Magnolia knock-off stuff I bought when I was in an unhappy marriage and had a very tight budget and money anxiety. So… Design makes a difference!
I’ve been working on some updates to this kitchen I renovated in 2019–it was a plain white kitchen back then which, it turns out, is boring but a flexible backdrop for several different styles. By swapping brushed brass for polished nickel and industrial metal for traditional painted wood, and a few other styling changes, I was able to lean into the Nancy Meyers kitchen vibes we all want these days—which hopefully is timeless since we love her kitchens from the early 2000s too! Proof you can transform a kitchen with a few surface level changes!!
Dying to change some things about this kitchen, but in the meantime, enjoying these handpainted dishes from Portugal! Lesson: don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Raise your hand if you need a cuter electric tea kettle. I totally appreciate good function, but these days there are cuter options for very practical things. (I am just now realizing. 🤪)
Honestly this has me rethinking my coffee station situation entirely, though, so we’ll see!

I also got some positive ones too, of course. Some nostalgia for 1950s kitchens people grew up with that also had these. I also got some practical comments that because this is near the trash, the fabric will get dirty. Yep, that makes sense. We don’t make that much trash and put food waste in the compost on the counter so I don’t think I’ll have to wash it every couple weeks or anything. I appreciate the concerns… but I guess this is part of my campaign against Internet trolls! Also to be fair, all of these negative comments were from Facebook! I’m excited to be adding some more charm to this kitchen, and these sink cabinet curtains are just step one!

Quick little project working on adding charm to my kitchen. Love these high quality French ticking stripe café curtains, and I made it easy with a tension rod!

A white kitchen used to be my dream. But I didn’t really think much beyond that. Just, white, please. Well, I got there and it turns out it’s not charming without a few thoughtful touches. I’m grateful for this kitchen we renovated back in 2019, but I would make some different choices now… But I’m not renovating again anytime soon! So these little changes have made a difference. Recommend for any kitchen!

I am a fall grinch. Every time this year everyone gets excited for PSLs and sweaters and I just want more fresh fruit, sandals, and wine tasting under blue skies. It means winter is coming, and I’ll have to figure out how to deal with all my leaves. And be cold for the next 8-9 months. And I *do not* like those pumpkin pillows (sorry). Can anyone help me get in the spirit? Tv or movies to watch? Unique flavors? Outfit ideas that aren’t too warm while we transition? Behind the times l over here.

I have never liked dish racks, they get so stinky with the mats below them, plus they are not cute and take up so much room! And I do not feel like hiding it away when done all the time. I started using this option a while ago and it works great! Caveat: it’s not meant to get/stay wet so you have to keep it dry, particularly below it once you take items off. But it has worked for me!

I love the look of a charger, but haven’t used them much before so literally had to Google it and learned this simple formula! It was so fun putting together this pretty table in my newly finished breakfast nook. The featured pieces are from @greenrow, they have such lovely romantic and moody things! Most of the dishes are antique or thrifted!
