Kitchen + nook

By suzannahstanley

Dying to change some things about this kitchen, but in the meantime, enjoying these handpainted dishes from Portugal! Lesson: don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.

Raise your hand if you need a cuter electric tea kettle. I totally appreciate good function, but these days there are cuter options for very practical things. (I am just now realizing. 🤪)
Honestly this has me rethinking my coffee station situation entirely, though, so we’ll see!

I also got some positive ones too, of course. Some nostalgia for 1950s kitchens people grew up with that also had these. I also got some practical comments that because this is near the trash, the fabric will get dirty. Yep, that makes sense. We don’t make that much trash and put food waste in the compost on the counter so I don’t think I’ll have to wash it every couple weeks or anything. I appreciate the concerns… but I guess this is part of my campaign against Internet trolls! Also to be fair, all of these negative comments were from Facebook! I’m excited to be adding some more charm to this kitchen, and these sink cabinet curtains are just step one!

Quick little project working on adding charm to my kitchen. Love these high quality French ticking stripe café curtains, and I made it easy with a tension rod!

A white kitchen used to be my dream. But I didn’t really think much beyond that. Just, white, please. Well, I got there and it turns out it’s not charming without a few thoughtful touches. I’m grateful for this kitchen we renovated back in 2019, but I would make some different choices now… But I’m not renovating again anytime soon! So these little changes have made a difference. Recommend for any kitchen!

I am a fall grinch. Every time this year everyone gets excited for PSLs and sweaters and I just want more fresh fruit, sandals, and wine tasting under blue skies. It means winter is coming, and I’ll have to figure out how to deal with all my leaves. And be cold for the next 8-9 months. And I *do not* like those pumpkin pillows (sorry). Can anyone help me get in the spirit? Tv or movies to watch? Unique flavors? Outfit ideas that aren’t too warm while we transition? Behind the times l over here.

I have never liked dish racks, they get so stinky with the mats below them, plus they are not cute and take up so much room! And I do not feel like hiding it away when done all the time. I started using this option a while ago and it works great! Caveat: it’s not meant to get/stay wet so you have to keep it dry, particularly below it once you take items off. But it has worked for me!

I love the look of a charger, but haven’t used them much before so literally had to Google it and learned this simple formula! It was so fun putting together this pretty table in my newly finished breakfast nook. The featured pieces are from @greenrow, they have such lovely romantic and moody things! Most of the dishes are antique or thrifted!

This breakfast nook is so charming, but I’ve had so many different thoughts about window treatments and nothing has been right yet. I hung these little café curtain rods earlier this year, but they’ve just been sitting there with rings waiting for curtains until now! @pepperhome makes the most beautiful, interesting, patterned curtains and other custom home items and they just started doing café curtains. Perfect!! I love the charming and playful patterns and weaves. And of course, the pinch pleat option!! These would be so perfect above a kitchen sink or on a little bathroom window too!

Command Strips have failed me again. The other day this painting fell onto Jason while he was holding Lucy and dishing up her eggs. He was not pleased with my brilliant decor idea (1-2 years ago) to put this pretty art piece up here without poking holes in the vent hood we made. Sorry, babe!! Ahhh!!
So now the vent hood is bare again and I’ll have to decide if it’s worth it to poke one tiny nail hole and hang something lightweight, or… just double up the Command Strips when I want to hang a little Christmas wreath or something. I know people swear by them but I’ve had several bad experiences with them! What would you do?

We’re into the last (and best! Tomatoes!) harvest season for our vegetable garden and will be wrapping it up soon for the year. I put up a blog post today about what worked well and what didn’t in the garden this summer. I also have had a realization about giving myself permission not to do everything I want to do all the time… cause a vegetable garden is hard in this time of life. Thinking about paring it down. Have you guys found any ways to make gardening easier with little kids? Sprinkler system maybe?!

Since the beginning of the year I’ve just been doing whatever I can to avoid painting these cabinets 😛 Honestly the plate walls are working! Linking the supplies I used in this post in the LTK app, plus all the other sources. 2019 kitchen reno still going strong and I’m doing what I can to keep from being bored with it!

I bought some “organic earthy modern” Target decor a few years ago that was no longer serving me. One by one replacing these little things feels good! And now I have another pop of blue and white in my also 2019 simple kitchen! It helps!
Found this charming little ceramic sugar bowl that I put xylitol in and keep handy for my protein shakes. Recommend for some extra charm!

Thinking 2024 is my year of making my blue and white dreams a reality. I’ve loved classics like these since I was in high school, really, just didn’t know how to incorporate them. These shots are just a tiny sample!! Can’t wait to finish that guest room, even more fresh preppiness. 💙🤍

I hung these plaid thermal blackout curtains on one of the coldest days of winter, but they’ve been super useful on the hot days too!! As charming as this breakfast nook is, I leave it covered up half the year. 🙃

Having so much fun mixing antique dishes lately. I rarely make it to goodwill or antique stores these days so I was shopping on Facebook for antique plates last night for a plate wall. No luck, but the hunt for the right thing often takes a while!
Others sources linked in this LTK post. Love a good mix of new and old, high and low!

My first plate wall (in 15 years?) is up! Instead of using the brass hangers, I found some very cool, very secure adhesive solutions. I love pretty colors and patterns this vintage plates I’ve collected over the years have added. Comment “plate” and I can send you the links to my DIY project supplies list that has them on it!

Two things. 1, I haven’t shared this on the feed yet, my practical, kind of funky (British inspired?) insulation solution for this charming but single pane window space. These curtains are thermal blackout, and they do a ton to keep the cold out of the kitchen! It’s such a difference. Plus they are cute. Linked them in this post in the @shop.ltk app. 2, the other day I posted all of these rustic jugs/pottery on Facebook and sold them all. I’ve decided they are just not my style anymore and they are not serving me, so out! Making room for new things. It feels really good, recommend.
(Don’t mind the rods and rings on these windows with nothing on them… Café curtains are coming someday.)

I almost never share this kitchen anymore, since I am pretty bored by at this point (2019 reno), but it looks a lot more interesting and cheerful with some red from the Christmas dishes. Making me happy today. The kids are with their dad and I’m having a quiet day at home which I’m trying to enjoy. I think I’m going to try watching some Hallmark Christmas movies now. Hope you are having a wonderful Christmas so far!
