Almost nothing on the calendar this weekend and boy, do we need it. Jason hasn’t seen the kids since Monday or Tuesday and I’ve seen maybe a little too much of them 😵‍💫
I’m an only child so watching their sweet relationship is all new to me. Otto talks to Lucy like we do (“Aw, my sweet girl!” “Look Lucy, it’s your big brother!” “Lucy is so soft.” “No no Lucy, you can’t have the trash.”) and they both get so excited when they see each other after they’ve been apart. Yes, Otto may occasionally give her a squish instead of a nice hug, or try to pick her up to move her 🤦‍♀️… but really I hope their special bond continues all their lives. ❤️ What have you found makes good sibling relationships?

Mixing vintage pieces and new neutral classics in our living room.

I love this bathroom. I love that we added the beadboard trim and painted it something other than white. I still love the color (SW Acacia Haze), but now that pale green of some kind is the color of the year for like all the major paint brands for next year I kind of wish we had done something else, like a rich light blue or even warm pink?! I like to go against the grain a bit. Have you added green to your home in the past few years? Do you love it?

You guys. I can’t believe all the color and pattern I’ve been adding to my home lately. The vintage Ethan Allen sofa is in and we love it! It’s 2’ longer than our last couch so we can all comfortably fit on it, and it’s such a statement! I think it looks great with the new rug but still want to find something to layer in the middle. Also some side tables. Also a new coffee table. Also… Well, let’s just say I have some more plans. What would you guys pair with this sofa? What throw pillows? What coffee table?

Still working on some changes in here but I’m excited with how Otto‘s room is feeling! The vintage oil painting, gingham bedding, and new funky block print shade have added some charm to the modern nursery furniture. The tutorial for this pleated lampshade is up on my blog today. There are a few other tutorials and methods out there, some with sewing, some with self-fabric trim or bias, and I wasn’t up for either of those so I did a no-sew method and used premade contrast trim, which is actually kind of English country and fun. I will definitely be doing this again!! Check out the tutorial on the blog and pin for later!

New jute banded rug!

I recently bought this chair on Facebook Marketplace. It’s Ethan Allen c. 1995 and it’s pretty bold for what I usually go for! But @heidicaillierdesign says every home needs a floral chair and I appreciate concrete tips like that in my mission to add more color and pattern to my home.
I haven’t shared it yet cause I was still figuring out styling with it. And now, it will not go with the new patterned sofa! So I think I’ll try it in our room!
This view has changed a lot from when I had plain white chairs here… this is a little much but it’s definitely not boring!

It’s cold butter season. Anyone else notice this? We don’t keep our house all that cool in the summer or super warm in the winter so now that it’s cold out and the heat is on, the butter at this room temp is no longer soft like it is in the summer! A little thing but something I notice about the changing seasons.
P.S. Realizing I could take this kitchen to the next level with beautiful, high quality accessories rather than the 10-year-old salt/pepper grinders and oils from the store bottles (probably shouldn’t be that close to the heat anyway). You can renovate your kitchen all day long but it still doesn’t look like a page from a magazine with the real life stuff in it unless you upgrade, I guess!

13 months later… finally done/calling it done with my experience “losing the baby weight.” It wasn’t as easy the second time around by far but I’m feeling in a really good place with it/my feelings now. Blog post is up today if you’re interested!
Lucy pulls on my shirt when she wants to nurse—something Otto never did! It’s sweet.

Do you decorate for 1) fall, 2) Halloween, and/or 3) Thanksgiving? When we bought this house we didn’t know we had an apple tree cause it was enveloped by an extremely overgrown arborvitae hedge and more. It was a nice surprise! Plus I picked a few really delicious, crunchy, Fuji-type apples from it the other day!
This might be all the fall decor I get to this year. 😂 We’ll see. 🍎🌿

Command Strips have failed me again. The other day this painting fell onto Jason while he was holding Lucy and dishing up her eggs. He was not pleased with my brilliant decor idea (1-2 years ago) to put this pretty art piece up here without poking holes in the vent hood we made. Sorry, babe!! Ahhh!!
So now the vent hood is bare again and I’ll have to decide if it’s worth it to poke one tiny nail hole and hang something lightweight, or… just double up the Command Strips when I want to hang a little Christmas wreath or something. I know people swear by them but I’ve had several bad experiences with them! What would you do?

It takes me ages to pick, but I just ordered and received some beautiful Indian block print cottons. I’ll share them in stories.😍 I think all three are going to be pleated lampshades! Is that like the project of 2021, or what?! Would YOU try it?
I recovered these sconce shades with a simple flat DIY recovering project in January, check my story highlight and tutorial on my blog.

We’re into the last (and best! Tomatoes!) harvest season for our vegetable garden and will be wrapping it up soon for the year. I put up a blog post today about what worked well and what didn’t in the garden this summer. I also have had a realization about giving myself permission not to do everything I want to do all the time… cause a vegetable garden is hard in this time of life. Thinking about paring it down. Have you guys found any ways to make gardening easier with little kids? Sprinkler system maybe?!

Been spending extra time sitting here feeding Lucy first thing in the morning, rather than getting her dressed first and bringing her downstairs. It’s so cozy and quiet. ❤️
(Except for the fact that Otto has been having a hard time staying in his room till his block turns green, or not getting up at 5 AM (or last night 12:30 AM, three times)… hey that reminds me, any tips on helping a 3.5-year-old stay in his room? 😭

Just trying out these prints above the bed. I like the art, I wanted something there to add some interest… But it’s definitely a little weird. I was picturing something horizontal, but I had these and wanted a place for them. I’ll probably change them. But it’s fun to see how much something like a couple of 8 x 10 antique art prints changes the feel in here!

This light fixture is vintage but I tried to link some similar ones! Kind of industrial/nautical pendants.

One of my goals for my home for 2021 was to add more color and pattern. Hence the pink chair! And I want to recover these sconce shades with pleated patterned fabric. My trip to the fabric store for that was a huge fail. Nothing even close. I ordered a few Indian block print options on Etsy! What do you think I should go with here, something with some pink in it to go with the chair, or something with some blue to go with the rug and because I’m usually drawn to blue accents?

It’s my birthday! When I ask my dad what he wants for Christmas or birthdays, he always says, “A happy, healthy family.” Well, I get it now. That’s honestly literally all I want this year. I’m so grateful for these wonderful babies even when things are hard (most of the time) and they make me so happy. I already have everything I want! (Except maybe some babysitting for a night away sometime… ironic how that works, huh?!)

We are very excited to have that much on the calendar this long weekend! We really need a quiet one. We will be doing a few Labor Day-ey things like grilling! We have been loving our @traegergrills grill so much and have made some delicious grilled steaks, chicken, veggies, and even Dutch oven recipes in here. The Traeger has been our dream grill for a long time because it’s also a smoker and it’s so easily adjustable. This is the Ironwood 885 and it has huge capacity and a lot of features like Wi-Fi heat and smoke control.
What are you guys grilling this weekend??

This light fixture is from the habitat for humanity restore but I found some sort of similar ones. Also linked this great unobtrusive booster seat and other kid stuff from our breakfast nook!

My biggest accomplishment last weekend! Still need to remove the last tricky bits of painters tape and wipe off the grout haze one last time, but I am just in love with how this is looking! Also, easiest tile project ever… I got lucky (and was able to choose a tile that matched the width of our brick) and only needed to cut two tiles.
I was grumpy a couple times this weekend when I was grouting instead of enjoying my alone time at the gym, and didn’t get to do a couple errands I wanted… I’m feeling better now. I am proud of myself for fitting this in! Thanks for to Jason for mixing the mortar and cutting the tiles for me. We got this done really fast!
I’m putting together a blog post about this project. The tile is from the @prattandlarson outlet, so many amazing things there!

Really pumped that our patio is done! Large outdoor rug, new dining furniture, string lights, pretty table linens from @saffronmarigold, new incredible powerful and versatile grill/smoker from @traegergrills… we are set!! All the details are on my blog today.
We had grilled skirt steak and veggies out here last night! We are so happy with the #traegergrills grill, and I got Jason to share his favorite things about it in the blog post too.
Swipe for how this space looked in June, and then how it looked when we bought the house 3 years ago!

Linking this amazing $30 hammock that I’ve been trying to spend some time in every weekend!
It even comes with the straps and hooks for hanging!

Which is harder: going from 0 to 1 or 1 to 2 kids? I always really wondered about it and now that I’ve been a mom of two for more than a year I felt qualified to reflect. I asked Jason what he thought, too. Shared a blog post about it today, insights about what it’s been like the past year, and hopefully some helpful perspective. Plus a big realization I had the other day. Spoiler: grateful!

Sold the white chairs that were here even though I haven’t found replacements yet, and moved the black side table… so now we just have toys and no place to hide them! Lots more room to play though… 😜 I’m dreaming of some dark wood, not-too-vintage-ey caned chairs for this spot. Or maybe not, maybe floral! They’re just in my imagination…
Our sewer backed up yesterday and the emergency plumber fixed it for now, we think, and they’ll be back with a camera to scope it and confirm today. Cross your fingers for us that it was just accidentally flushed baby wipes in an old pipe, not tree roots that we’ll have to dig up and remove ($$$)!

Celebrating my first full night’s sleep in our bed since last week and feeling good. 🙌 We tried alternate schedules for the 5-hour drive cause of the kids and all in all very successful! We left at 5am Thursday and has two very sleepy kids the first couple hours, then left after dinner Saturday and put them to put on the road and got home at midnight. Much better than stopping every hour and a half cause one of the four of us is fussing! 😂 Have you guys tried these schedules on car trips? What works best for you?

Lampshade crisis. Results were pretty divided about the black ones. I think they’re interesting and cool but also a little much for my otherwise muted and neutral living room. Also I’m planning to recover the sconce shades, probably a pleated patterned fabric! I think I’ll return the black shades (I hadn’t changed the lightbulbs yet to compatible ones which is why they’re crooked), but not sure if I should do white or patterned, or back to no shades… or replace the fixture entirely 🤪 Thoughts welcome!

It’s a fun before/after, but this room was kind of the tipping point for my stress and overcommitment, and caused a lot of anxiety. But it’s okay; I used that breakdown as fuel to start my de-stressing project and really turn things around. That was more than a month ago and I’ve had a couple slip-ups and stressful times since, so I’m reflecting on what’s working in a blog post today: how I’m going to reduce stress and be happier. Anyone else need to do that? You can join me!

Indian block prints in my home!

Not pictured: if you forget to close the new (recovered) Roman shade it gets crazy hot in here, particularly on the window side, but the vent on the other side of the cabinet is super powerful and the back half of this room is freezing. Tile too.
Not complaining because this is the first house we’ve lived in that has had central AC. But some spots are a little confused! Do you have any of these hot/cold rooms? Is it just an old house problem?
