Dark denim looks great head-to-toe, but for maximum indigo impact mix up textures and patterns.

Circumnavigating all the supersized and balloon-like trousers on the high street, I found a pair that not only fit in the rise – I have an extra-long body and this is always a crotch-bothering issue – but are also a splendid colour and made in a beautiful cotton poplin fabric. These days I buy fewer clothes and I am really careful to only purchase items, both new and second-hand, that will add mileage to my wardrobe. Otherwise what’s the point? Anyhow, when I tried the new kecks on at home with my old checked tweed blazer I was reminded of the importance of balance and proportion...

I usually wear this outstanding vintage coat with neutrals, such as, black and camel. These colours tally with the print and tame it somewhat. Over the years, I've never paired The Beast with chocolate brown - and boy, have I missed out on a tasty combination.

At this time of year, I often turn to the navy knit. Some days a timeless classic is what you need. Keeping it simple and functional, no faffing.

Don't miss the latest subscriber post on That's Not My Age. And here's an edit of neat navy jumpers..

If you need function, warmth and spend much of your time outdoors, the duvet coat has a practical appeal like no other. The cosiest of outers, mine is firmly back in action now that temperatures have dropped.

I bought this padded coat from Muji last year, but here are some alternative winter warmers, all available to shop right now.

#LTKuk #LTKwinter #LTKover50style
Less heavy and heat-inducing than a big scarf, easy to stow in your bag and perfect for perking up a coat collar, it's no wonder that knitted neckerchiefs are everywhere, right now.

The burnt orange lambswool style I'm wearing here is from Margaret Howell, bought at Folk.

And here are some other winning knit-picks:

I've been spotting kilts everywhere recently. From Boden to Burberry, the Scottish stalwart is once again enjoying a well-deserved moment in the spotlight. And though I can't claim to be even remotely Scottish, I'm delighted by their return.

Here are some of my favourite styles in the shops right now..

One of my favourite styling tricks (current obsessions) is to bring on the beads. Layering a selection of strands together is an excellent way to liven up an everyday outfit and add some pizazz to plain necklines.

(The necklaces pictured are from jeweller Amanda Doughty, and available on her website, please head to TNMA for more details)

After years of stomping around in lug-soled hikers or black leather shit-kickers, I’ve gone back to chic, as opposed to chunky, ankle boots. Lately, I’ve been wearing the Tods Chelsea boots in the second photo (a sale bargain, years ago). Comfortable, polished and still pleasingly smart, they temper baggy cargo pants, and look the business dressed up with straight-leg, black jeans and a velvet jacket.

Step this way for more elegant boots you can walk in, and read the feature over on That’s Not My Age.

I am big fan of the tweed blazer but the blouson-style could be a new way to wear this beautiful fabric. It works for me...

Who doesn’t love a good pocket? The main reason I’m into utility jackets is because of the plethora of pockets. Enough room for hands, cards, keys and a mobile phone if you’re lucky. This belted style is a few seasons old from Weekend Max Mara, and is the perfect weight for October's transitional temperatures.

Here are some similar versions to shop right now.

At this time of year, loafers offer the perfect bridge between Birkenstocks and boots, covering up a chipped, summer pedicure while allowing the wearer to remain footloose and sock-free. And this Autumn the slip-on shoe with enduring style is more popular than ever.

There’s something pleasingly insouciant about basket bags and woven shoppers – but as we savour the last days of summer I’m wondering if there’s a way to carry the essentials around and carry this relaxed spirit into September?

Birkenstock’s are iconic for a reason – they offer solid support and are hard to beat – and I do wear mine a lot. My black Eva's saw a lot of action on a recent holiday in France. So comfy to wear, this style is also waterproof making them the perfect choice for beach days.

While I’m never going to twin a handbag and shoes, I have mellowed on matchy-matchy and this summer I’m enjoying the co-ordinating set. I'm wearing an indigo pinstriped, organic cotton shirt and matching skirt (called in for the shoot) from Herd. But here are some other cool combos...

 #LTKuk #LTKsummer #LTKstyletip
Unusually I have two wedding celebrations this summer, so I'm on the lookout for summer dresses with structure and status to wear for smarter work events and special events. This chocolate brown dress from Souer is a winner.

#LTKover50style #LTKsummer #LTKuk
This checked top in a winning olive green and pink check is from Boden. The perfect pull-on-and-go style for summer, the fabric has its own natural crinkle which looks lovely and might be acceptable to those who do not love linen like I do...

It's been put in the summer sales, but there are still a few sizes left!

#LTKover50style #LTKuk #LTKsummer
SPF is no longer enough when a heatwave hits; now you need a packable sun hat for extra protection. Look for a cool cotton bucket hat or a foldable raffia number that isn’t going to get ruined when you shove it in your bag. Here are some favourites...

#LTKeurope #LTKsummer #LTKover50style
This pull-on-and-go top came in quite handy on a recent trip to Milan. For daytime summer dressing when you want to look stylish but not too try-hard, a simple silhouette with a little ‘extra’ is the solution.

Khaki frill shirt #PRGIFT from Nrby and currently available at John Lewis

#LTKuk #LTKsummer #LTKover50style
One thing I realised recently as I sweated over what to wear for a meeting in 30+ degree temperatures, is that although I have numerous beach-ready frocks and WFH kaftans, I have fewer options for the increasingly-frequent scorching hot days in the city.

This linen print dress, on loan from Whistles, is a winner!

Things you never knew you wanted…Having never worn white – apart from my school shirt in the 1970s – I now find myself in favour of this light, bright neutral. It’s a wardrobe revelation. Say hello to The Full White Skirt. Read the feature on That's Not My Age and shop my edit right here.

The shirts are out. As soon as the temperature rises, I reach for a cotton button-down. Cool, wafty and super-chic. The pull-on-and-go properties of a cotton poplin, striped shirt are second to none. As you know I’m a sucker for blue and white, but last year I pivoted to pink. This shirt is from Faithfull the Brand (no longer available) but here are some similar options for the new season...

Spring Outfit, Ralph Lauren, Pink Shirt

Although I’m a long-term blazer-lover, the boxy-fit jacket with a 1950s-feel is incredibly versatile. Jacket Weather brings wardrobe happiness and the opportunity to play around with colour, print and texture. Here are my top picks

Jacket, Trench Coat, Boden, NET-A-PORTER, ME+EM, Anthropologie

 #LTKspring #LTKstyletip
Winter is the time when I reach Peak Wardrobe Happiness. All those lovely fabrics to layer up: tweed, velvet, wool, corduroy... Mixing and mismatching is the way to go with different textures...

#LTKover50style #LTKuk #LTKeurope
Say no to sequins and find other ways to shine this party season. A few years ago, I stopped buying sequins and I know a lot of my followers have taken a similar approach. That’s not to say I’m perfect, I like clothes and it is lovely to have something new. But these days, I always check the label and try to go for natural fibres as much as possible. Which is why I’ll choose silk velvet, not sequins this holiday season. New feature over on thatsnotmyage.com

Tis the season to wear corduroy. This lovely, plush fabric is warm, durable and comfortable, too. An excellent winter option. Corduroy adds a touch of understated glamour to any outfit.

As the amount of makeup I buy is minimal, I’ve always enjoyed treating myself to a posh soap. This week I started on my stash from Porto, and we’ve included some lovely soaps in our Christmas gift edit

#LTKskincare #LTKuk #LTKover50style
This week’s knit pick! A super soft lambswool cardigan from Brora, which reminds me of the cardies I wore as a kid growing up in the 70’s. Love the pop of red on the cuffs and collar.
(Also available in green!)
