Designer Tip: Buy things you like. This may sound too obvious, but I think this tip can be overlooked more than any other tip when designing or decorating a space. We live in the days where you can make an entire Pinterest Board of aesthetically pleasing spaces and can save endless IG posts of trending design inspiration. I love all of that and I do all of that. BUT. But, it’s important to remember who you are and what you like. Your style doesn’t have to fit into one category. You don’t have to ONLY be mid-century. Only coastal. Only grandmillenial. Only “cottage core”. Your home doesn’t have to look exactly like the homes you see on social media. My home is mid-century modern with lots of cottage-like elements and vintage keepsakes. Why? Because I like it! You could probably add a few other style names in there too! I don’t believe we have to fit in a box. I DO believe our home should be an overflow of who we are. There’s beauty in a home that tells the story of your family. A home that reflects what you find beautiful and what you value. In my home you’ll find art painted by my great grandmother, a mid-century dining room table and chair set refinished by my brother and I, art I made, pictures of loved ones, matchbooks collected from travels, old things, new things, things I find pretty, dried flowers and fresh flowers, things I splurged on because I value the craft or skillset involved. There’s lots of seasons and stories on display. There’s also lots of things I simply find beautiful and don’t have a meaningful story behind them. When you choose pieces YOU truly love, the outcome is beautiful and home feels like home. It’s authentically you and there’s something really comforting about that.
