I’m in a time of wanting to read books that matter, that mean something or ones that make me think a little deeper…Only the Beautiful certainly met those requirements. This story is a heartbreaking tale of the devastating ways people were treated throughout both WWII as well as those seen with differences in the US during the 30’s and 40’s. Rosie is a young, orphaned girl with the ability to see colors when she hears sounds. When she becomes pregnant, her caregivers send her to an institution where she fights to keep her baby and her dignity. Meanwhile in Austria, Helen desperately tries to save the children in her care and much unimaginable loss. Ultimately, these women’s stories are woven together in a redemptive way and a reminder that light always overcomes. The truths in this story are unfathomable and hard to read at times but ones that we carry with us. If you’re looking for a brokenly beautiful story, this is it! If you’re read it, I’d love to know your thoughts!
