Day 2 of Winter Dresses for the #WinterStyleChallenge - Suede dresses

I LOOOOOOOVE suede. I love the look, the feel, the texture. And it’s a perfect fabric for winter.

Today’s dress is the @level99jeans Mahina Hourglass Midi Dress - I cannot link it through @liketoknow.it but definitely check out their website. It’s on sale right now 👍 I wear this so many ways - tights and pumps, booties, with jewelry, minimalist… I chose to go with my knee high boots and a fun scarf to keep me warm.

Yes, this fabric is curve hugging. A body contouring dress will show off all of your beautiful lines so your curves can be celebrated. And celebrate you should! 💃 We all have amazing bodies that should be shown off to the world 🌎

This week’s theme is another one I love for Winter - dresses! 💃

I think many picture Winter style as the typical jeans or leggings with a big warm cozy sweater. Sometimes Winter dresses are overlooked! Well, I’m here to show you that dresses can be warm AND stylish throughout the colder months.

Today, I grabbed one of my all time favorite dresses - a body con sweater dress. This knit dress is very warm because of it’s thicker fabric. And Winter is the greatest time to pull out those tights at the back of your sock drawer (yes, mine migrate back there most days!) because tights are truly your friend in the cold climate.

I’ve styled this with my Oxford heels and a thick, fun brown belt to make this a monochrome outfit. I’ve added some gold accessories to bring the whole look together.

Day 5 of 1 Skinny Jean 5 Ways Winter Edition - the Quintessential Winter Classic

I couldn’t end a Skinny Jeans week without the essential Winter plaid shirt! I’ve styled this fabulous Mile High Super Skinny with one of my favorite @rails plaid called the “Patriot” tied in the front. And then added my @timberland knee high boots and my favorite @restrungjewelry guitar pick necklace 🎸 I bought these boots over 10 years ago and unfortunately they are not available. But I did tag some suggestions from @thefryecompany and #drmartensusa that are super cool. I also linked to Restrung’s Etsy page to their newer version of the necklace.

Day 4 of 1 Skinny Jean 5 Ways Winter Edition - Simple style

Today I’m focusing on simplicity in your clothing but punching it up with fun accessories! I’ve styled the Mile High Super Skinny from @levis with a simple black turtleneck top. With a “blank” canvas such as an all encompassing turtleneck with long sleeves, you can really make the look your own.

I’m a huge fan of layering jewelry so I added a long silver lariat with my favorite Moon and World layered necklace. I then layered my rings and grabbed a bunch of bangles!

My girl @theunexpectedinfluencer asked about wearing over the knee boots with skinny jeans and the answer is YES. But it requires a “super skinny” that is tight to your body. A “Skinny” just won’t do it because it is not tight to the ankle like a super skinny. If your skinnies stretch out more than a 1/4 size, you won’t be able to fit them well. I don’t personally wear over the knee because of my body type but as you can see here, this super skinny definitely fits easily into a knee high boot.

Day 3 of 1 Skinny Jean 5 Ways Winter Edition - Graphic Tees 🙌

What a classic - jeans and a graphic tee. And add a sweet denim jacket and you have a great laid-back vibe but that is unique to your own style.

A few points on denim on denim - this is one of those “rules” that needs to be thrown out the door. Of course you can work the denim jacket and skinny jeans look. If you are a bit squeamish but still love the look you can choose to wear different washes. I usually recommend trying a darker wash on the bottom and lighter on top, but obviously I don’t follow that recommendation. This dark wash trucker jacket looks fabulous with all other washes of jeans.

You may notice that Fall and Winter denim is darker while Spring and Summer denim is lighter - it makes since with seasons, but now is the time to find great darker wash jeans and jackets. I highly recommend having a variety of denim jackets with different washes. I use ALL of mine throughout the year and would add MORE to my collection. But right now I have a light wash, medium wash and dark wash to work with.

Another tip with darker washes - the denim tends to be stretchier. That’s because cotton doesn’t hold onto the dye as well so spandex and other stretchier fabrics are used to keep the color better. With that, darker washes are thinner, as well. So this jacket fits really well under a coat! I can’t tell you how this jacket is such a staple piece.

Yes, I love Matthew McConaughey and I love Wooderson. I was a bit down one day and saw an interview with Matthew and knew this tee would cheer me up. And it did! And it still does. I got this tee from @teepublic and I can’t link them to my @liketoknow.it post so check out their site. They have the best tees!

I finished the look with some Doc Martens because it just feels right. Yes, I could have done a cowboy boot but we have over a foot of snow in my part of the woods so Docs are awesome AND practical today. 👍

I’ve been reading about how Gen Z is looking to change up all the current styles and replace tighter-fitting clothing with looser, less form fitting styles. Great! I always welcome the ideas and creativity of new generations! But this is why it will not work…

As a child of the 80s - the baggy look has come and gone throughout my long Gen X life. I’ve seen it all! But fashion isn’t dictated by a single group of people who think the way they dress is best. Cultures, climates and society as a whole creates their own look throughout the years.

The skinny jean seems to be on their hit list. And I get it! Many people I know don’t feel comfortable in a tighter fitting pant - whether physically or emotionally. But skinny jeans will always be around. Because it works for so many different groups. Do you HAVE to wear them? You should know me by now - there are NO RULE BOOKS. Wear what you like.

Skinny jeans work so well in the Winter. It’s just a fact. They slip into boots easily and a good pair will keep your thighs warmer 😂 Since there are different styles of skinnies, there are so many ways to style them. I’ll talk more about the different styles of skinnies throughout the week - but for the challenge I chose this pair of Mile High Super Skinnies which are not only unbelievably comfortable, but this medium wash clean denim is so versatile for so many different looks.

I’ve styled them today with a faux leather (WASHABLE) moto jacket, plum cami and little booties for a simple look, but always with a touch of rocker chick.

There are leather jackets and then there are LEATHER JACKETS.

This is my favorite leather jacket that’s the genuine thing!! I decided years ago that I wanted a true motorcycle jacket and brought this sweet piece into my life.

And it comes with many ways to stay warm in it. There are 3 different shells you can use underneath for maximum coziness! I like to keep it simple with pair of jeans and simple scarf and beanie for warm vibes.

Double down on the Winter Leather!

There’s nothing wrong with wearing leather on leather - just ask bikers! 😂

Today I styled my faux leather kick crop pants with a simple button-down shirt over a black bralette. I love to layer. The masterpiece of the whole look is the patent leather trench coat in this gorgeous green. And it gave me a reason to try out my new camo pumps - I couldn’t help myself, camo is just my signature print. 💚💛🤎

I used a fun eye palette from @younique to make a flame type sunset like look for my makeup - I have SO many amazing friends on IG that do awesome looks. Mine does not compare at all but I tried. 🔥🔥

I think there is a certain idea of what clothing can be leather - I think people assume if you are wearing leather as a top, that it’s going to be more rocker and not as useful for everyday wear. Sure, when I wear my leather pieces, I feel bad ass. But I can dress for work and feel confident in my choice.

With the rise of faux leather and the materials they use, leather tops have become more mainstream. They can be full on blouses with puffy sleeves and wear more like a shirt than fitted. I bought this leather shell years back and have worn it in many ways. It’s sleeveless - I’ll show it off more in the video - and looks amazing with so many different outfits. I wear it to concerts with super skinny jeans and pumps. I wear it with a tight-fitting top underneath for a layered effect. And I wear it for work, too! I love speaking to groups or working with a client with a touch of leather to make me feel great about myself.

I styled it today with a pair of drop-hem bootcut jeans and a black blazer. I accessorized with a pair of black booties and a skull tassel. It fits right in and says bad ass even when you are going for a more subtle look.

I’m BACK! And this week’s theme for the #WinterStyleChallenge is Winter Leather

This was one of the most asked for of themes at the beginning of the Challenge. So I’m here to BRING IT! 🖤🖤

Today I’m starting off with the classic (vegan) leather legging. These days, it’s easy to find a leather legging. Just beware of the materials - they shouldn’t fall apart after a few wears (some are so cheap that they start to shed from stretching and rubbing against chairs. That’s why I recommend going with a higher-priced pair so you get your money’s worth out of them. I’ve had these @LysseNewYork leggings for a few years and they don’t overstretch or shed. They are truly durable and worth the price. I’ve linked them in my @liketoknow.it post for today.

I love the silhouette of wearing a seamless body contouring cami or tank top with leather leggings. So sleek and sexy! When you add a cardigan or duster over it, the fabric just brushes against the leather so effortlessly and highlights the seductiveness of the hips and thighs.

I accessorized with a Y drop gold necklace to nestle down into the décolletage, my favorite statement earrings - my @zodiacaa Leos ♌️, a few gold rings and bangles.

I’m glad to be back - I want people to understand that life isn’t just putting on outfits and taking pictures. Everyone has their ups and downs and mental health is very much swept under a rug because it is uncomfortable. I’m so blessed to have my friends here on Instagram to give me words of encouragement and lift me up. You are all wonderful souls that I would talk to any time you may be going through something that feels like it’s not going to get better.❤️

I can’t help it - I love Plaid blazers. Maybe it’s a catholic school thing 😂

Today’s plaid blazer is paired with my @freepeople Walk Around maxi dress and a big buckled belt to give the look some shape in the form of a waistline. I added some fun boots and cool gold accessories to finish the look.

Don’t forget that blazers aren’t just for that work suit look. They look great with dresses, too. Nothing is more dreamy than a fly away maxi with a blazer and oversized scarf or long tassel necklace.

It’s Winter Plaid Week on my #WinterStyleChallenge and you can do more than just wrap a plaid scarf around your neck! 🧣

Today I grabbed my green plaid blanket scarf and turned it into a poncho and keeping it in place with a nice thick belt. It’s very comfy and the belt keeps it from moving around while giving you a waist. With this turtleneck, it was very warm for my outside photoshoot in the snow ❄️

This look isn’t for someone who will be picking things up and moving things around all day, unfortunately. With this style, it somewhat limits your arms from really lifting them high up. So it can be a bit annoying if you are planning on doing manual labor.

You can achieve this look with any blanket scarf so try it out sometime when you’re bored with your sweaters or jackets! It’s really fun!

What is it about plaid and denim? I mean, is it NOT the go to look? 🔥

No matter what the denim, it just looks so damn good. So I styled this @rails red white and blue plaid with my favorite denim maxi skirt from @silverjeansco 💙The darker wash with fading just looks so good with this particular plaid. I added this amazing @bedstu belt and my @thefryecompany Taylor western bootie.👢

What would Winter be without its trusty plaid? This week I’ll show you tips and tricks on how to think outside the style box when you want to wear your plaid.

Don’t be afraid to mix your plaids! This tip comes off of my leopard look from last week. Just because you have one plaid piece on doesn’t mean you can’t share the spotlight with another piece. Here I’m wearing a more basic white and black plaid button down with this busier plaid blazer. I wanted to show you a safer version of this mix because I want you to see it really can be done more subtly and is work appropriate for those Zoom meetings

Go crazy! Grab some contrasting plaids to mix and match! Don’t hesitate to find that playful look that says you don’t and won’t hold back

So this week I decided to give myself a break - sometimes this app is just too much. I had created a question on which theme to use this week and NONE of the responses were saved. Instead of blaming the app, I attacked a few friends telling them I was upset they didn’t answer my question when I try to always answer theirs🙇‍♀️. And I apologized to them, because that is what adults do. Constantly trying to do the “right” thing and satisfy the system on IG is taking up too much time in my life. I was hoping after a few years, I would be able to create growth that would help me, as a single mom. But, Instagram has other ideas for my accounts.

I will continue to do my weekly themes because I love giving tips and tricks and ideas that might help you to wear the clothing you have in your wardrobe. I adore my followers and love styling. I love speaking about body image and the beauty in all of us. That will never change. But I will be cutting down the days I post. More like 3 instead of 5 days during the week. 🗓

I had to post my latest Free People sweater. I know there are blanket coats and I think this will be my version of that! I feel like I’m ready for the new Dune movie! I love that you can use the cowl as a hood - it makes me feel so bad ass, like when Leia recorded her message on R2D2. 🤖

I will be spending more time on my passion project - @mymoodymonster👾 I would love for you to check it out! I want to help those who suffer with emotions they feel out of control with. It came to me from my own frustration with my mental illness. So, I think spending time on making this passion come through is important for me. It will make me so happy to see it in the hands of those who need it.

Day 5 of Winter White Week - Rocker Chicks don’t always wear black! 😎

I was looking forward to this look all week! I knew I wanted to end with a bang and I think this look is super fun! I almost tried to find a “Boy Toy” belt a la Madonna but I thought that might be going a little far 😂

So I rocked out this look with a white tulle midi skirt with my favorite Fleetwood Mac Rumours band tee and an original trucker denim jacket from Levi’s. This look definitely called for some sparkly booties so I added my gold glitter booties and finished it off with my @boho.statement Sun and Moon earrings and some @restrungjewelry gemstone bangles. The bangles are made from used guitar strings they repurposed for their art. 🎸

There’s not too much to say about this outfit other than I feel so happy in it! I don’t want to take it off even though these boots are stilettos 😬

Day 4 of Winter White - White Blazers and Jackets

When most people think of a blazer or jacket, I think white is down on their list. Understandable… kinda. When thinking of blazers, I think it’s a common misconception that they are considered “work wear.” And yes, the look of a blazer is a reminder of that old college professor look or for Sunday Best. 🕴

And white jackets and blazers feel more formal for many. Men wear white jackets and tuxes at formal weddings, right? So it can’t possibly be an everyday kind of style. NOT TRUE!🙅‍♀️

I adore white blazers for so many reasons. They are sleek and sophisticated - they bring a luxe feel to a look. They capture attention because people aren’t expecting it.

Today I styled my “winter white” blazer with a cowl cami which creates a sexy neckline to add a gorgeous pendant necklace. It’s like the pendant just lays in between your décolletage
I added extreme contrast with the black jeans from @level99jeans - they have a satin finish to them which is a part of their Forever Black dying process. Their black jeans are less denim and I’ll talk more about that in my Live.

I love my @thefryecompany block heel black booties - they are higher and more open than ankle which allows the jean to fit comfortably tucked in. And I love how they help accent my curves with the height of the heel. I added my @Apple Watch with a black leather band and my FAVORITE earrings from @zodiacaa - my Leo ♌️. symbol earrings. They have this style in every sign, so check them out for a great statement earring.

Day 3 of Winter White - Natural White

Some of you may remember there was this fashion rule that was truly archaic but women seemed to always follow it - don’t wear white after Labor Day. I never understood it. It makes zero sense and one of the biggest reasons why my third principle of style is THERE ARE NO RULEBOOKS 🚫

Eventually, this strange rule started to dissipate - maybe as my generation (that’s X if you couldn’t tell 😆) got older, we just decided that was silly and we can wear whatever color we want on our damn bodies. But it wasn’t a clear, “Now you can wear white” attitude. Somehow, it got around that OFF white was what you could wear after the leaves changed.

And so we started seeing designers send this “winter white” down the runway and everyone was happy - because it didn’t 100% break the rule, but it gave a little F-you to the previous generations 🖕

And so I present to you today the first step to white during the winter. Many designers call it “Natural” and one of the Levi’s jeans I linked to in my @liketoknow.it post is called “Tofu.” It’s funny that I spoke of a blank canvas yesterday, because this color and especially the denim feel completely reminds me of art canvas. Or maybe painter’s pants? 🎨

I styled these skinny jeans (they aren’t super skinnies, which I like) from my sale scoop up from @freepeople and added a light blue linen button down which I did a half tuck with - I love that look with such a laid back pant. I added some dark brown ankle booties which allowed the hem of the jeans to fall without getting bunchy.

I got this @ambersceats Emery Cuff from my Winter @curateur box and love the gold plating of it. I added a cute dangling necklace from @anntaylorloft which is actually a little leopard at the end. I’ve linked both in @liketoknow.it ☑️

Week 2 of the #WinterStyleChallenge is a trend I don’t naturally tend towards and so this week is really going to be a challenge for me. So I’m stretching out of my safety space and am happy to do so!

Winter White has always been a look I love - and after all the kind comments from my followers about how great white looks on me (thank you all so much!) I decided to plunge into the #winterwhite trend myself. 🤍🤍🤍

Today I decided to go ALL THE WAY and go for a full white look! I don’t usually wear a lot of lighter colors on the bottom because of my body type but here it is 2021 and I am #unapologeticallyme and am going for the whole white shebang! And the bonus surprise of all of this is in the video! 😍

I got this adorable pullover sweater from my friends at @twenty20boutique (check them out, they have the greatest styles!) and knew it would look amazing with a pair of white skinny jeans and my beloved @thefryecompany Jennifer (hee hee - that’s me! 😁) shearling bootie. I added my newest lariat from @restrungjewelery and it just looks so perfect against this stark white. The bangle bracelet also stands out well with the all white look.

Day 5 of Oversized Sweaters Week - Dolman Sleeves

There are so many styles of sweater sleeves and I love the dolman sleeve for many reasons. It has a dreamy, boho quality to it and if you get a boat neck, it looks stunning off the shoulder. 🥰 It gives extra room if you are active throughout the day (re:picking up after your kids, or significant other 🙄 ) And, I know this sounds weird, but they give room in the armpit because let’s admit it, going in and out of warm rooms, it can get a little sweaty 😂 If you don’t like tight fitting arms, then a dolman sleeve is for you!

I love this sweater for every day use but it dresses up well with a pencil skirt and heels. I added a long pendant necklace as well as a fun faux fur infinity scarf! For me, I’d wear this scarf if I were out in an office all day or out for dinner. I love scarves both indoors and out. But if you get warm, you still have a necklace to dress up the look. And it makes it easier for outwear since it’s already a part of your outfit!

Day 3 of Oversized Sweaters Week - when to size up ⬆️

So this outfit is literally what I wear when I’m home for the day and doing work. It’s for when I’ve done my workout, I’m out of my PJs and want to feel human. And this sweater is my “house coat” 😂

What makes this sweater so amazingly comfy and easy to live in is that I decided to size up when I bought it. I normally wear a size small, but after trying it on, I knew I wanted to get a size or two bigger so it had that cocoon feel while giving me the room to do my busy work throughout the day. So I sized up to a L/XL so that I would get that dreamy flow and cascading collar. With a pair of black leggings, a seamless cami and some Ugg slippers, it’s a dream lounge look.

But don’t you hate it when you realize - shit, I have to get on a Zoom call later! Or - Damn it, I forgot I had that appointment! No need to tear off your hibernation wear, just add a few accessories to complete the look!

You can’t deny the Fosse style this look has going for it - the all black, form-fitting bodysuit look.👯‍♀️ So go bigger Fosse and grab am oversized brightly colored scarf and a pair of black booties to zhuzh it up! 💃And I’m loving this @fentybeauty Gloss Bomb Cream in Fenty Glow as a natural lip color for everyday casual. I tried out their new Snap Palette in 7 Cadet and like that I could make it subtle with the more vivid pigments 🤎💛💚

The length of this kind of sweater makes it harder to wear shorter jackets and the bulk of the extra fabric in the arms can be uncomfortable in standard arms. So check out my video to see what coat I pair with this look for the best comfort and style.

Day 2 of Oversized Sweaters Week - Cowl Necks

If you don’t know me (Well, you could probably tell just by my photos) I love some over-the-top styles - like exaggerated features. That’s why my hair is a color red not found in nature 🧑🏻‍🦰

So with an exaggerated feature in and of itself - oversize sweaters - I also adore when the neckline is over the top, too! Like this cowl neck sweater. Now, this one is really cool, because you can wear it two different ways, like this as a cowl neck or as an off-the-shoulder look, as well. But this being Winter, I am not too into exposing my shoulders to the cold air, so this is my favorite way to style it for right now.

I’ve worn this sweater a million different ways (over dresses, with skirts, with trousers…) but the oversized sweater with skinny jeans and boots just screams winter coziness and is a New England classic. I chose a dark wash skinny for contrast with the cream and my favorite mahogany Frye boots - the color is so rich and feels decadent. 💋

You can’t really wear this look with a tighter style jacket or coat. For this particular sweater, it’s too long for a short puffer coat and the cowl makes it hard to zip up a coat. Have you ever zipped up your jacket and got your shirt caught in it because there is so much fabric? That’s what we’re looking at here. It’s 2021 (finally!🎉) and a new year full of possibilities. And I personally couldn’t be more excited for new ventures, new ideas come to life, and new challenges…

Style Challenges, that is! 🏆

If you’ve been following my original account on Instagram (@styledefiner), you may have seen my very first style challenge I created at the beginning of the Quarantine in March. I called it the #ShopYourClosetChallenge and created a new look every day with the clothing I had in my wardrobe 👗👠

As the days went by (over 120 of them!), the challenge evolved as I created themes each week with how-to’s and live videos to go with each look. My #FallWardrobeChallenge focused on styling as we transitioned from Summer to Autumn in New England. And so this Winter Challenge will start off strong with cold weather style and, as we enter into the Spring season – how to cool down the warmer pieces we’re wearing.

I’ll be posting a new theme every week and continuing my Lives as well as @liketoknow.it posts, where you can easily shop your favorite pieces. Don’t have the LIKEtoKNOW.it app? Just waiting for that 2021 New Year’s Ball to drop!

My @thenorthface Camo Parka is my go to for cold nights out - with my @freepeople cozy scarf and @salemstyle pompom beanie, there’s no way I’m freezing while celebrating a New Year.

And what a new year this will be! So much to look forward to and feel more positive about! A vaccine 💉, new ventures, meeting new people and getting back to healthy living are some of the things I’m looking forward to!

I am a sucker for an oversized button down - especially when the floral print is big and bold! This @freepeople top is one of my all time favorite tops for a night out - add a pair of black skinny jeans (hint - you want a midrise jean so you can tuck the front editor-style) and some @thefryecompany block heel booties and your ready to party all night long.

I added my @restrungjewelry skinnys earrings to add a fun sparkle to the look while staying low-key with the necklace - just enough to fill the empty collar space but not taking away from the top, which is the star of this show.

Solid Gold - who else watched the most amazing dance show when they were kids? I know it wasn’t just me (though I am showing my age!)

I love getting sparkly for New Years Eve - and gold is just my default but when I saw these copper @lyssenewyork foil leggings, I knew I could pull the two together. The sleeveless low cowl neck top goes wonderfully with the leggings to give length in the front but show off your butt in the back. Add some black pumps and gold jewelry and you’ve got yourself a NYE look that everyone will be wanting.

My makeup had to be bold gold, as well. I used the @urbandecay Naked Reloaded palette for my eyes with my Beached Bronzer, @narscissit Orgasm blush and @fentybeauty Diamond Bomb All Over highlighter and my favorite stocking stuffer - Fenty Gloss Bomb Cream lip gloss in Fruit Snackz.

As we get closer to NYE, I’ll be putting together different outfits for that special night. Even though we can’t get out there and party all night doesn’t mean we can’t dress for the occasion - with a Zoom dance party on the computer!

It’s CHRISTMAS EVE!! My favorite day because I get to see my family to give them the presents the boys and I got them 🎁🎁 Of course, this year is different - my mom is driving up to the house and we’ll be handing off the presents which is a bummer, but we all need to stay right now. Later, we will drop off my brother and his wife’s presents to their house and hopefully the weather will stay nice so we can at least sit outside and talk a little 🥰

My official Gift Delivery uniform for today is a pair of flares with my new @liverpooljeans #boyfriendblazer in hunter green plaid with a stretchy @nikibikiapparel seamless cami underneath. All very comfy for car rides and moving presents! I added my awesome @boho.statement Sun and Moon earrings with a layered Moon and Starts necklace. I want to be whimsical and magical on a special delivery day like today!

It’s a jolly red Christmas Eve Eve for me! Making sure the wreaths are hung just right and made my way to the Butcher this morning for the meats for my Christmas Gravy. 🎁

I’ve been making the Sopranos Sunday Gravy every year for Christmas Day - I got the book at least a decade ago as a fun little gift under the tree, and now I open it at least this one time a year to braise ribs, veal, sausage and meatballs and slow simmer a gravy to die for. My family loves it and even though we won’t be celebrating together, I bought a lot more so I could bring the dinner to them in the evening. NO ONE will miss out on this dinner!

A little fact, I eat keto so the whole dinner is basically perfect for my diet - just skip the pasta (or maybe not - I might have to treat myself, though my belly won’t like me for it later!). I can’t wait to get the Italian scent of tomatoes and basil cooking in the kitchen while my boys and I watch A Christmas Story by the glow of the tree. Tree🎄

As for the outfit - the top is an old Ann Taylor that I absolutely could never get rid of. I love the cowlneck and the ribbed, fitted look.
