How to Decorate a Christmas Tree With White and Colored Lights

If you’re not mixing colored and white lights on your tree… what are you waiting for?! It’s the easiest way to get that perfect balance of warmth and crisp, classic sparkle.

1. Start with the colored lights.
These create the depth and glow. Begin at the base of the tree and work your way up. Wrap every branch from base to tip, tucking the lights deeper inside for dimension.
Tip: Choose non-LED colored lights that don’t have that purple tint—those give the tree the most nostalgic, warm look. I’ve linked two great options.

2. Add the white lights next.
Use the same base-to-tip method, but wrap them more loosely. These sit a little closer to the surface of the tree and give that crisp, bright twinkle layered over the colored glow.

3. Use plenty of lights.
For my real 10 ft Christmas tree, I used:
• 5 boxes of 300-count colored lights
• 5 boxes of 300-count white lights

The combination makes the tree look fuller, brighter, and absolutely magical.
