I used to think anything “extra” was just more work.

put makeup on? why bother?
tablecloth on the dinner table? just to scrub pasta sauce?
wearing “real” clothes to stay home all day? why do the extra laundry? (since Lord knows they’re not staying clean)
a minute to drink my coffee while it’s hot? that’s funny !!!

but something I’m learning about mothering: the extra 10% that feels indulgent or “too much” is oftentimes the thing that makes the other 90% feel life-giving...

It’s like we keep trying to push a stroller with a flat tire.

And someone says, “Hey, you can pump the tire,” and we say, “no, I couldn’t possibly do that, I’m too busy & that’s one more thing.”
— pumping the tire doesn’t ADD to the work. it quite literally makes the work possible.

& it’s the same with the “special” moments that bring us joy (which will be different for every mom!!)
not for the sake of perfection or the sake of aesthetics.

literally just JOY for the sake of JOY. for filling your cup, rather than labeling yourself as “another thing on the to do list”

because my kids are watching everything & the last thing I want to teach them about mothering is that it means pouring from an empty cup 🫶🏼

talk about a thought that’s convicted me over & over again in motherhood 😮‍💨

I felt very alone in my mindset towards motherhood until I read “hunt, gather, parent” for the first time. in her book, michaleen doucleff articulated thoughts i’ve had since my first was born about the ways kids & families operate.

in her book she says, “It’s not my job to entertain the children. It’s their job to be part of the team,” and as a mom who doesn’t love to *play*, I finally felt seen.

what I saw in my son made sense— it’s ALL play. to them, cooking, vacuuming, folding, grocery shopping— all of it is play.

yes, I want kids who can be kids, use their imaginations, and play. AND I want kids who find joy & purpose to work as part of the family team, to contribute valuably, to collaborate with adults and be confident in their abilities.

and sometimes that looks like making messes

good for your gut, high in protein, and you can make it so easily at home!

we love buying a rotisserie chicken (especially at costco because they’re $5!), using it for multiple meals and then saving the bones to make bone broth.

use veggies you already have — onion, carrot, garlic, celery + add in some herbs (I love using rosemary, lemon, turmeric, ginger or anything else in the fridge/garden) and keep them in large pieces.

fill the pot with water, bring to a boil, and then simmer for about 8 hours. then let it sit to cool— the longer it sits, the better the flavor. I like to leave it overnight with the lid on!

then strain & enjoy!! 🍲 add to soups, drink on its own, etc!
