When I was a kid, I remember my mum in her painter’s smock, heading to the studio to work on her art. She said, “Nobody’s going to make you happy but yourself, so you better go and do it.” That stayed with me.

When Eli was born, I chose to stay home for a while, and I’m grateful I could… but parts of me felt paused. Michael’s life shifted, but not in the seismic way mine did. That season of life was filled with joy but also wasn’t easy.

When the kids started school, I came back to myself. I’m positive it was my mother’s voice ringing in my ear that helped me along the way. And I can’t help but wonder how many women never get that nudge…how many talents go unseen because no one told them they’re allowed to want pursue their passion. Thanks mum for the push and the space to be me.

Let’s be honest — everyone wants to look taller. Legs for days. A long, uninterrupted silhouette. If you don’t, I have questions.

The easy rule: One color head to toe. Instant elongation. No math required.

Before you panic and think this is a boring snooze fest, relax. Mix textures. Let your fabrics do the talking. And don’t forget your baubles/ Think long necklaces, vertical earrings, a stack of bracelets. Yes, jewelry can elongate you too.

And now… I’m breaking my own rule. Why does a peek of a gold boot work? Because it adds shine without chopping the line. It catches the eye, feels intentional, and somehow makes the whole look even better.

Moral of the story: rules are meant to be broken

This year brought growth I didn’t expect, lessons I didn’t plan for, and moments I’ll carry with me for a long time. There were surprises, a lot of joy, a little chaos, and yes… plenty of fashion along the way.

If pattern mixing feels intimidating, it’s usually because you’ve tried it before and something felt off, but you couldn’t tell why. It’s not that you’re bad at it or that it “doesn’t work for you.” Most people were never given a simple framework, so it ends up feeling overwhelming instead of fun.

Pattern mixing isn’t about throwing prints together and hoping for the best. It works when there’s intention behind it. Here’s exactly how I approach it.

First, start with a color thread.
When patterns share at least one common color, your eye can follow the outfit easily, even if the prints are very different. That shared color is what anchors the look.

Second, play with scale.
Pair one larger, bolder pattern with a smaller, more detailed one. If everything is big and loud, nothing stands out. Let one piece lead and let the others support it.

Third, treat stripes and solids like neutrals.
Stripes help ground florals, plaids, or polka dots, and solids give your eye a place to rest. This is what keeps the outfit from feeling overwhelming.

Fourth, don’t forget texture.
Mixing fabrics like silk with wool or denim with knits adds depth and keeps the look from feeling flat.

And finally, confidence is part of the formula. Pattern mixing works best when you wear it like you mean it. When you feel good, the outfit reads as intentional and effortless.

Fashion should be fun. If you love the pieces individually, trust yourself to love them together.

Here I go again with the Merchant Ivory influence. I just can't help it. , Getting dressed, has always been "playtime" for me, and once that Renata Brenha dress arrived, the gloves came off. This mermaid core dress I shockingly happened to have lying around in the closet (🙄😅) was perfect for The Little Mermaid movie debut. At first the whole video was all about the sparkle… But it ended up turning into more than that for me. It made me thank myself for the years of moving regularly. My disciplined hour of exercise 4-5 days a week has become my oasis. I adore the movement and the focus. It has become a form of meditation. It has also enabled me to recently stand up onto the armrest of an airplane seat and contort myself whilst dislodging my fellow passengers carry-on bag that had unfortunately ensnared itself in the overhead compartment. Yay for me!

I actually find the best color combinations to pair with gold or silver metallic leathers are neutrals and cream tones. The contrast is softer between those tones and metallics. They always look very fluid. They talk to each other in soft whispers. Whereas, sometimes a silver or gold leather jacket paired with something black looks a little jarring. P.S. This fantastic chainmail vest is a vintage piece. I’ve had it for 25 years, and supposedly it was Jerry Hall’s. It’s made numerous outfits.

For years I stayed away from the classic trench coat in beige (it is not my color). In the past few seasons, there have been so many fantastic iterations and combinations I couldn't take it anymore. I finally cracked with a cropped COS trench a couple of seasons back. I've been using lipstick and accessories that complement my skin tone to brighten the look. If a piece in the wrong color is speaking to you, try a little smoke and mirrors 😬😜. It works every time.
