When winter packing feels overwhelming, it’s usually because the coat isn’t doing enough. I start by choosing one warm coat that doesn’t need a lot of extra layers underneath. When the coat is the focus, the rest of the packing naturally gets lighter. This is why I usually bring a wool coat for most cold-weather trips: • Wool provides warmth without bulk • It regulates temperature well, so it’s comfortable indoors and out • It rewears easily without holding odor • One coat works across most outfits, instead of rotating jackets • It looks polished enough for day-to-night wear • While not waterproof, it’s naturally water-resistant and handles light rain or drizzle well, especially with an umbrella With the right coat, you don’t need as many sweaters, backup layers, or “just in case” pieces underneath. One smart choice can eliminate a lot of extra packing.
