I’ve been thinking about how we save our gratitude for eulogies. How we wait until someone’s gone to say all the things we should have said when they could still hear us. How we hold our love like it’s something precious to ration out, when really it’s meant to be spent freely, recklessly, now. I don’t want to live like that anymore. I don’t want my people to wonder if they mattered to me. I don’t want to carry around all this appreciation like it’s too heavy to share, only to realize one day that the person I wanted to tell is no longer here to receive it. So I’m trying to say it now. While they’re still sitting across from me at dinner. While they’re still answering my texts. While I can still watch their face light up when they realize I see them, really see them, and I’m so grateful they exist. The world already takes so much from us. Time, certainty, presence. The least I can do is make sure the people I love know it. Not later. Not at the right moment. Not when I’ve found the perfect words. Now. Messy and imperfect and too much.
