Don’t make the HUGE mistake I almost made!! 🤦‍♀️ 💜Follow @KatieOSheaAway for all the specific details you need to plan your dream trips! As it turns out…wearing neutral colors on safari is NOT just for the cute fit- it’s to blend in with the scenery and not scare the animals with bright colors! AND in some locations dark colors, whites, or bright colors can attract insects and flies! What we learned packing for this amazing safari in South Africa is that packing for a safari is a very specific vibe - part practical, part cozy, part cute, and part “please don’t fly away in the wind.” 😂 (There were a couple people who wore baseball caps that flew away…) 
After experiencing sunrise and sunset game drives, chilly evenings, and lots of dust, these were the pieces I was SO glad I brought. 🦁My safari packing MUST-haves:
✔️ The perfect packable hat - it smooshes down flat, is breathable, AND cinches so it doesn’t fly off the jeep. Absolute essential.
✔️ Neutral colors - I am the most colorful outfit girlie, but for safari, stick to tans, olives, browns, & muted tones.
✔️ Vineyard Vines Dreamcloth Shep Shirt - my cozy essential for staying warm. I lived in this.
✔️ Warm layers - mornings + evenings are cold. I was so grateful for:
– a thermal base layer
– a lightweight vest
– a windproof rain jacket
– a cute scarf (my signature pop of color 🩵 I just couldn’t do ALL neutral 😉)
✔️ Comfort over everything - dust, wind, and long drives = you want clothes that feel good all day. ✔️ Actual hiking boots not just “cute shoes” - we got out of the vehicle and walked around. There are snakes (we didn’t see any, but they’re out there) and some people used the “bush toilet” - I was glad to have actual hiking boots not impractical shoes. 🦁 Why layers matter:
Safari days start before sunrise, and the temps climb fast - you’ll be freezing at 5:30am and warm by 10am. 🛒 Perfect timing:

– Weather can flip quickly - bring layers, especially on the coast and safari

Sitting in an open-air jeep, hearing the low rumble of a lion before you even see it… then suddenly it’s right in front of you. Nothing prepares you for that moment. 😳🔥 This was one of those “okay… life is WILD” experiences - the kind you remember forever. We were looking for the lions on our sunrise safari…and then suddenly the lions were looking AT us. This massive lion snuck through the bush on the side of our jeep and locked eyes with us. We all collectively gasped and froze in our tracks. It was so insane and magical. A moment we’ll never forget. 📍Gondwana Private Game Reserve, South Africa

🕓 About 3–4 hours depending on pace This bucket list trail starts right from Lake Louise and climbs steadily through the forest. You’ll pass Mirror Lake, stop at the iconic Lake Agnes Tea House, and continue to the Little Beehive overlook — with panoramic views of the lake and surrounding peaks. 🩵 🫖 Lake Agnes Tea House Tips:
✔️ They take cash (CAD or USD) — no credit cards or phone payments
✔️ It’s first come, first served — go early to avoid the wait!
✔️ Pack out all trash — they fly supplies in by helicopter and hike waste out
✔️ Menu includes tea, fresh baked goods, soups, and sandwiches — all made onsite!
✔️ Bring your own reusable mug or utensils to be more eco-friendly 🌿
✔️ Sit outside if you can — the views of Lake Agnes are incredible 🥾Trail Tips:

White Sands actually used to be a National Monument and now is one of the newest National Parks in the US! 😍 You’ll find a field of white sand dunes composed of gypsum crystals - some dunes reaching as high as 60 feet (18m)! We captured these shots during our New Mexico Road Trip and hiking through the dunes on the Alkali Flats and Backcountry Camping trails! ☀️ It was absolutely INSANE when the sky turned pink, purple, orange, and blue and the dunes were these beautiful colors reflecting the sunrise and sunset. AND one of the best parts was we had the park all to ourselves for sunrise and after sunset!! Unlike many national parks that are open 24/7, this park opens at 7 am and closes 30 minutes after sunset, meaning you won’t be able to catch sunrise in the park depending on the time of year. But you can apply for a special permit for early entry and late exit which allowed us to capture astrophotography! 📍White Sands National Park, New Mexico
