This is it! My essential curly hair products and tools I use every single chance I can get my hands on them: 1. Cleansing and Buildup Removal 🫧 Malibu Undo Goo is used for every single client without fail. I don’t care how many times you’ve been in my chair, this product is doing way more heavy lifting than you could imagine! This is then followed by either the Malibu Hard Water packet or the Curl Partner packet to finish removing any remaining buildup. 2. Conditioning 🧴 Color Radiance Conditioner by Innersense provides hydration without weighing the hair down. It will always be a go-to for me. 3. Styling Products and Tools 🪮 Now you’ll need a couple tools: the Bounce Curl Define Brush and a microfiber towel. And a couple products: Innersense I Create Hold and Innersense and I Create Lift Volumizing Foam. Brush/clump curls with brush. Apply I Create Hold. Scrunch moisture with the towel. Apply foam. In that order. 4. Drying and Finishing 🧖‍♀️ The L’Oreal Air Light Pro is an amazing, high-end blow dryer, so if you have the budget for it, do it! But if not, using any diffusing hair dryer on high speed and low heat will work flawlessly! Then finally apply Innersense I Create Finish hair spray to hold the look and have you ready to rock those curls! You may think this is an exaggeration, but as a teen, if someone gently removed the hair straightener from my hand and drove me to a curly stylist, I think it would’ve changed my life’s entire trajectory.

The cut ✂️
Keep a lot of weight at the bottom then add some light layers after getting that base situated to prevent anything from looking sparse or stringy. Then finish off the style by cutting dry after everything and following curl pattern after washing and adding product to ensure the curls lay and end where they should.

Products 🧴
You want lightweight products that hold well to ensure fine hair isn’t weighed down. Let me know if you want me to send those your way!

Styling 🪮
Use a flat hand if curls seem to be disrupted by scrunching product in and root clip! When diffusing you can hover diffuse for elongation and to create less frizz or scrunch diffuse to coax more volume out of the curls.

I’VE BEEN THERE.

As a teenager, I had no idea what to do with my curls and turned to a straightener every. single. day. Not because I wanted to, but because I felt like I had no other choice.

I knew next to nothing about what was good for my hair, how to clump curls together, and testing products felt like a neverending parade of failures.

I was OVER IT.

But as I got older and went to school to be a stylist, figuring out how to properly care for hair similar to my texture became something I was VERY interested in and could even study on myself!

One day, I looked in the mirror and realized I couldn’t remember the last time I touched a straightener and took a closer look. My hair looked healthier than it had in years. I found products that helped my frizz, and cut my hair into a curly-friendly shape.

I realized I appreciated my hair and even found it lower maintenance allowing it to go natural.

Then I started getting compliments on my curls and went out of my way to market myself to others with curly hair so I could help them.

I realized I wanted to be the person that helped others see the beauty in their curls without the years of education and frying with an iron it took me and my hair.

And it’s the best thing I’ve ever done in my life.

Caring for colored curly hair shouldn’t feel impossible… because it isn’t!

You can absolutely still have beautiful, coiled, juicy curls after coloring your hair if you care for it properly!

Making sure your curls aren’t dried out plays a huge factor in your hair health. Not scalding the color on your hair and using the right conditioner and/or conditioning treatments to lock in that moisture will help to color stay and your hair remain healthy ♥️

I will always recommend using products that will protect the color while still cleansing and creating a fantastic curl pattern your texture is familiar with. Finding effective, color-safe products will be the key to extending the life of that color without fading or shifting.

Let’s deep dive each of these curly products…

1) Miche Gel To Foam Styler: 6/10
Did not help my hair dry faster like it said it would, consistency really good, smell is overpowering, ingredients aren’t great, price point is pretty good.

2) Miche Sculpt Curl Defining Gel: 7/10
The smell was overpowering and gave me a headache. The ingredients are great, the price point is good, the consistency is okay but hard to scoop out of the tub when your hands are wet.

3) Osis Curl Jam: 7/10
The smell was a little strong, price was okay, ingredients were not great, application was terrible, but it held up nicely.

4) I Create Definition Styling Foam: 7/10
A stiff hold and feels like straw and crispy, ingredients great, consistency is great, used sparingly, but on its own is not great.

5) Big Poppa: 4.5/10
Definition is great, hold is awful, price point is great, ingredients are alright, and easy to scoop out and use.

6) Curl Wow Curl Shook: 1/10
Smell was fine, price point is high, ingredients not great, application not good, hold is non-existent.

7) JVN Complete Airdry Cream: 6.5/10
You have to use a lot for it to work, price point is expensive for how much you use, good if you like bigger/undefined hair, smell fine, consistency is great, ingredients aren’t terrible, hold isn’t great.

8) Amika Curl Corps: 5.5/10
Smell is fine, consistency is fine, ingredients are okay, price is extremely high, held up nicely.

9) Olaplex No. 10: 2/10
Does not have frizz control at all, consistency nice, smell too strong, price is too high for the amount you get, ingredients not good, hold not there.

10) A Curl Can Dream by Matrix: 0.5/10
Hold non-existent, smell not great, ingredients not great, price point is fine. Don’t waste your money.

11) Doux Mousse Def: 8.5/10
Consistency great, it’s a one and done product, ingredients not great.

12) Umberto Giannini Curl Jelly: 6/10
Price point great, consistency nice, ingredients not great, hold not great.

I will never stop telling you to turn your blow dryer speed UP and your heat DOWN!

The air is what dries your hair, but what we’re trying to avoid is damaging your hair and having curls facing odd directions because the heat is basically doing what a straightener does–forcing it into an unnatural position.

We want to dry curly hair fast with minimal damage. Turning your heat down still gets you less frizz and the volume blow drying provides, but doing so without damage is key here.

If you have curly hair and don’t own a hooded dryer, I HIGHLY encourage you to consider it!

I credit my hooded dryer for a lot of the curly hair styling success in my studio and while, yes, you can absolutely still achieve the same results with a blowdryer, the hooded dryer is quicker and hands-free (goodbye achy arms 😅).

How I Use A Hooded Dryer To Set Curls:

1. Apply styling products on freshly washed + conditioned hair
2. Style your curls by using the bounce curl brush + I Create Hold Gel
3. Sit under the dryer until your hair is about 80-90% dry
4. Break the curl cast using I Create Shine, shake out + fluff the curls
5. Complete with the Innersense Finishing Spray to set the curls in place

Trying to describe what you want to your stylist can sometimes feel like trying to project an image from your brain into theirs. And sometimes playing that game is unfortunately ineffective. So take it from a curly stylist–say this instead!

If you want…

VOLUME: “I want layers & weight removed for lift”

DEFINITION: “I want shape & movement, with less bulk”

LESS FRIZZ: “I want my curls to clump better & look more defined”

EVEN CURL PATTERN: “I want everything to blend, so no pieces fall flat”

LESS BULK: “I want weight removed underneath without losing fullness”

If you have hard water or aren’t using water-soluble products in your hair, you NEED to be detoxing your hair. As a stylist, this feels like something that is NOT optional.

On top of your hair already creating buildup naturally and your environment adding to that buildup, then using water that can’t fully be washed out and/or adding products that will live there for an insane amount of time feels like a recipe for weighing curls down and disrupting your curl pattern.

If you aren’t sure if it’s really doing much for your hair when you detox it, I encourage you to try it ONCE and then come back to this post to tell me whether your hair was impacted.

If you’re following a curly hair routine designed by someone with an entirely different curl type for THEIR OWN hair, you’re doing it wrong.

Your curly hair routine needs to be tailored to the kind of curls you have, the thickness of your hair, the porosity, etc.

I find that porosity is one of the biggest decision-makers when it comes to what does and doesn’t work for my clients. Although the routine and products look SIMILAR, they are not at all the same.

Please be careful when you follow someone else’s routine and test out whether products actually work on your hair type before adding them into a full routine!

The ridges.
