There’s a pattern to my table styling.

It took me a bit to realize that I kept repeating the same formula because it just works.

I start with a statement piece…usually something old or unique. Add organic items like sticks or greenery, give it some height with tall pieces and finish with mixed materials…wood, gold, silver.

I want my eye to move from item to item…not knowing where to look first. That’s where the interest is born!

Curing this space’s loneliness taught me a few things.

Start with the bones. A 1927 leaded glass arched window and a slate mosaic floor should be complimented.

Build a foundation before you build personality. A hero piece. A riser. A light source. Three pieces that create structure before anything else arrives.

Height variation tells the eye where to go. The tall friend who stands in the back of every picture needs a spot. Give it one. Let the eye travel.

Every styled space needs a secret that’s impossible to keep. Something that rewards the people who look twice. Two blue velvet tufted ottomans with gold legs tucked under the console. They were never really good at hide and seek. That shade of blue does not do subtle.

The right pieces always find the right spaces. You just have to be paying attention.
