Another Sara who could be the one haunting this park (Mount Madonna) is Sara Chavaria, who was killed by her boyfriend here in 1969. Or, the hauntings could be from earlier. Ancestral Ohlone residents were violently forced out of their village at the base of the mountain by early Spanish missionaries.

Thanksgiving will be sooooo good on the trail! We haven’t cooked a Thanksgiving dinner in a while, but we don’t think we missed any staples!

Fun fact: We tracked down the secret sweet potato pie family recipe from Tim’s aunt and learned… it’s just the recipe on the side of the can of yams! Still tastes amazing though!😅😂

This is how we deal with everyday bodily functions on trail. Always remember to LEAVE NO TRACE! We don’t carry toilet paper. Instead we bring the following…

Shared:
Hand sanitizer
Ultralight shovel

Renee:
Anti microbial pee cloth
Menstrual cup
Water filter

These are the details of how we use sticks or rocks, plus water, to achieve total cleanliness after pooping while backpacking. This is part 3 of a series we’re doing on “The Three P’s” - peeing, pooping, and periods on the trail.

A few caveats:
- Use toilets/out-houses whenever available to minimize your impact on the wilderness.
- Check the regulations where you’ll be. In some places it’s required to pack out your poop.
-Make your hole is big enough for all of your poop and cover it well (at least 6-8”/ 15-20 cm).

The Pacific Crest Trail was our first walk from Mexico to Canada back in 2018. It is so rewarding to come back years later to help maintain it! We had so much fun volunteering with Pounder and the PCTA a couple of weekends ago, that we came back for another weekend.

Our typical morning routine on trail: Tim makes coffee while Renee sleeps in. Whenever we add oat or coconut milk like this, we call it a trail cappuccino!
