Italy Recap
We wrapped up our trip with a quick stop in Pisa after leaving Cinque Terre. We were carrying all our bags with no stroller, chasing toddlers, and hunting for storage lockers that were somehow all full. The walk to the Leaning Tower wasn’t the most scenic, but we made it and took the classic photo. I tried to get Emy to do a kicking-the-tower pose, but Zach was over it. We had already taken so many pictures and he was ready to move on.

Afterward, we went to the most touristy restaurant ever. It was the first time I saw pepperoni pizza on a menu in Italy, which totally caught me off guard.

That night, back in Rome, we saw the new Pope announced on TV. It felt like a full-circle moment after being there for Pope Francis’s funeral just days earlier.

This trip wasn’t easy. There were train strikes, the airline lost our stroller, we had two little ones to carry, and more stairs than I can count. But we figured it out.

Traveling with kids takes work, but it’s worth it. They learn to adjust, to problem-solve, and to take in the world around them. We are already planning our next adventure. ✈️ 🇯🇵

Italy Recap
Our day in Cinque Terre 💙 We stayed in Riomaggiore but started our morning in Monterosso, the one with the giant statue guy on the beach. It’s called Il Gigante, and you really can’t miss him. It was cold and a little rainy, but I refused to wear pants. I was in my grandma pantyhose era and had zero regrets. Emy had hers on too, and Bill legit thought something was wrong with her skin because they were kind of baggy and nude-colored 😂

We explored, took pics by Il Gigante, did a little shopping, and then trained to Manarola for a chill day. We stopped at Poche Musse Gelateria, the cutest Italian ice place with lemon-themed decor, and the guys grabbed a paper cone of calamari and shrimp that was so good.

We tried to walk up to the scenic viewpoint. We made it about halfway, got some really pretty views, but didn’t go all the way to the top since it started raining.

In the afternoon, we had wine, bruschetta, and a charcuterie board at Bar e Vini a Pié de Mä, this pretty little spot on a cliff near the Riomaggiore train station with the best ocean views. I’m not even a tomato girl, but I actually liked the bruschetta. We ended the night on our terrace with wine, snacks, and that amazing view. One of the most relaxing days before heading back to Rome 🍷🌊🍋

Italy Recap:
On our way to Cinque Terre, we stopped in Genoa to explore for a few hours. We visited what’s believed to be Christopher Columbus’s childhood home. JeLisa was very much “he’s a colonizer” the whole time and didn’t want a photo near it, but I caught her standing next to it on video anyway 😂

We walked toward the waterfront and found a giant blue “GENOVA” sign. Emy was climbing all over it and having the best time. Then of course she fell and bumped her head. There was blood and it was a pretty deep cut. We debated if she needed stitches, but since we were in another country, we went to the pharmacy instead. The pharmacist told Zach to get bruising ointment, which made no sense. Zach was like, absolutely not.

We patched Emy up and went back to the train station, only to find out our train was canceled because of a strike. We waited for hours before finally getting on the 6:10 train and made it to Riomaggiore that evening.

Everyone was wiped out by then, but the views on the train along the coast were beautiful. Koa was asleep, Emy was on her tablet, and we just enjoyed the ride. We grabbed some food, went to our Airbnb, and called it a night. A little chaotic, but definitely memorable.

Another Italy recap. Our last day in Milan and we took a day trip to Lake Como.

We took a train to Varenna, then a ferry to Bellagio. The rain was supposed to hit that day, but I was going rain or shine. Luckily, the weather held up, and the ferry lines were quick. Maybe because of the forecast.

In Bellagio, we explored the beautiful town and walked the iconic Salita Serbelloni steps. We did a wine tasting first, then had lunch where I finally ordered my first risotto of the trip. It was a cacio e pepe risotto, and it did not disappoint.

After that, we took a ferry back to Varenna, then caught a quick train to Bellano. From there, we hiked to Orrido di Bellano, a dramatic gorge with roaring water, hanging walkways, and sheer rock walls. I thought we were heading to a peaceful little waterfall. Instead, we got rushing canyon vibes.

We wrapped the day with pizza and cocktails by the lake before heading back to Milan. I definitely want to return to Lake Como and stay longer next time.

Still catching up on Milan days. We started the morning on the metro heading to the Leonardo da Vinci Museum, but right as the train was about to leave, it stopped because a man had passed out on the floor. He may have had one too many the night before. Someone eventually stepped in to help, and once things settled, we were back on our way.

The museum was huge. With two little kids and after already going to several churches and museums, it was hard to stay focused. But once we reached the Leonardo da Vinci section, I was locked in. That was the coolest part. They had replicas of his sketches and inventions, and I was all about it. Uncle Bill stepped into tour guide mode again, and I was quietly hoping the kids were actually picking up a thing or two from him.

Later that day, we went to the top of the Duomo. I booked elevator tickets ahead of time because I knew I was going to be done with stairs by that point. It ended up being the easiest rooftop we visited. There were a few steps to get to the very top, but it wasn’t bad. The views were still beautiful, even with the scaffolding up.

Now about that big girl purchase. I started the trip thinking I wanted a Celine bag. I had photos saved and was convinced I knew exactly what I was looking for. But the bag I had been eyeing wasn’t Celine at all. It was Chloe. I totally mixed up the names because they sound so similar. We kept looking for Celine stores, and when I finally walked into one, I was confused why my bag wasn’t there. I pulled up my photos, looked closely, and realized I’d been searching for the wrong brand the whole time. It was a funny moment for sure. Eventually, I found the Chloe bag I wanted and bought it. Zach wasn’t thrilled, but I absolutely was.

We didn’t have much planned for this day. The goal was just to walk around, explore a bit, and relax before our next adventure. Our Airbnb wasn’t ready for check-in, so we dropped our bags at a luggage storage spot. These are all over the bigger cities and super easy to book ahead.

We made our way toward the Duomo and the shopping area and grabbed a coffee from Cioccolatitaliani. Not exactly what I was trying to order, but it looked cute and tasted pretty good. Their restroom setup was wild. You had to walk down a few mirrored staircases. Not the cleanest bathroom, but definitely a cool experience.

We got completely lost inside one of Milan’s massive shopping centers. It seriously felt like trying to find the exit in a Vegas casino. While we were waiting for JeLisa and Bill, we randomly ended up chatting with a guy from the Hell’s Angels near Louis Vuitton. He started telling us about his kids. Unexpected moment, but honestly really sweet.

I also tried to book tickets for The Last Supper the minute they were released, and the date I wanted sold out in under 20 minutes. That was the original goal for this day, but oh well. Next time!

This is a little recap of our Florence trip from a few weeks ago. Just now getting around to posting, but I wanted to share for the memories, for the kids, and for anyone else planning a trip or just curious about what we did.

This day was all about the Boboli Gardens, and it was such a good one. We got there early, around 8:30 a.m., grabbed some pastries, and sat in this cute outdoor spot to eat before exploring. The weather was perfect, the gardens were gorgeous, and I really liked my outfit that day. Emy looked so sweet in her little floral dress. I knew that was the right call for this spot.

The Boboli Gardens are these massive historic gardens behind the Palazzo Pitti. You walk through beautiful tree tunnels, fountains, and sculptures. It’s peaceful and not overly crowded, which was great for letting the kids walk around.

Koa wanted to hike up the steepest path he could find with Zach, while I went with JeLisa, Bill, and Emy to go find something called the Fountain of the Little Birds. It sounded cool, but honestly, it wasn’t that exciting in person.

There was also a sign for a café that turned out to be nonexistent, so don’t fall for that. And yes, I definitely picked the wrong shoes for the kids. Sandals were not the move. Koa kept stopping to shake out rocks, but they powered through. My sandals actually saved me though. I wore my Olukai pair with arch support and they really held up. Wouldn’t recommend regular sandals in Italy, but those were solid.

After walking around the gardens, we headed back to the Airbnb to rest, clean up, and pack since we were heading to Milan the next day.

That day, the guys ordered the Florentine steak, and I had truffle pasta that ended up being one of the best meals of the trip. I think the restaurant had “Pepe” in the name, which made me think of my dog.

Florence recap!
We kicked off the day at the Galileo Museum, which was actually really cool. They had a virtual reality headset that walks you through his life, where he studied, and what he did for science. Big shoutout to Bill (aka our personal tour guide and JeLisa’s husband) for explaining everything in normal-people terms so I could keep up.

Also, yes, they really have Galileo’s finger on display. It was removed back in the day when people treated him like the saint of science and wanted relics to honor him. Slightly creepy but fascinating.

Then we hiked up to Piazzale Michelangelo. Totally worth it for that panoramic view of Florence with the Duomo in the distance. It was really peaceful and pretty.

Later in the day, we squeezed in a visit to the Uffizi Gallery. We were all pretty tired by then, so we focused on the highlights like The Birth of Venus, Primavera, and a few works by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. It’s definitely a must if you’re into art, but even as non-art people, we appreciated it in small doses.

Ended the day tired but happy!

Recapping one of our favorite adventure days in Florence. We started with pastries and my usual café latte before heading off to climb Giotto’s Bell Tower. It’s 414 steps to the top. I had Emy in the carrier, and Zach had Koa. We definitely got some stares. A lot of them felt like people were cheering us on, kind of like “wow, you brought your kids and you’re doing it,” which was really encouraging. And yeah, maybe a few people looked at us like we were crazy too.

There were a few spots along the climb where we could stop, catch our breath, and enjoy the views. Once we made it to the top, the view of the Duomo and the city was stunning. Totally worth it.

After lunch, we visited the Accademia Gallery to see the Statue of David. It’s huge in person and so impressive. We also saw some of Michelangelo’s unfinished sculptures, which was cool.

Later, I finally found one of the things I was really hoping for ….a wine window!! We just happened to walk by it and stopped for a quick glass. Definitely one of my favorite moments of the day.

Catching up on our travel day from Rome to Florence from a couple weeks ago. We took an early morning train and it ended up being such a smooth and fun ride. It was around two hours, and the kids did great. They got orange juice and acted like they were on a flight. I had their Amazon tablets pre-loaded so they were set.

This was our first real test of carrying all our stuff through the streets of Italy. Zach was carrying his giant 40-pound duffel with the diaper bag stacked on top, and Koa in the carrier. I had my Cotopaxi backpack and the Calpak duffel, which I instantly regretted bringing. If I could go back, I would’ve switched my Calpak for a smaller personal backpack. Or even better, we should’ve just used a rolling suitcase and stacked the Calpak on top. Definitely would’ve done things differently next time.

Thankfully our Airbnb in Florence let us drop off our bags early, so we were able to explore right away. We grabbed pastries and I got my usual café latte, which was my go-to drink the whole trip. Every morning pretty much started with pastries and a latte, but after all that walking, I was definitely missing a full breakfast with eggs and hash browns.

We spent the rest of the day wandering around with no real plan. Explored shops, walked to Ponte Vecchio, had a wine and charcuterie lunch, and ended the day with gelato. Emy had her first cone and that was it and from then on she only wanted gelato if it came with a cone.

Our third full day in Rome was spent exploring the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica. We had early morning tickets to the Vatican Museums, which I definitely recommend. It was still busy, but not too packed, and we were able to move around more freely without being stuck behind tour groups the entire time.

There was so much to see…art, sculptures, tapestries, and more. It was definitely overwhelming at times because there’s just so much packed into each room. We did have the audio guide though, which helped for some pieces.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t see the Sistine Chapel because of the conclave, so that’s already on our list for next time.

Later that day, we went back for a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to climb to the top of the dome, but we found tickets on Get Your Guide that let us decide once we were inside, which was perfect. I ended up doing it. I took the elevator to skip the first 200 steps, but still climbed over 300 steps with Emy on my back. The stairs were narrow, twisty, and kind of intense, but I’m so glad I did it. The view at the top was amazing, and there was a nice breeze. Will I ever do it again? Probably not, but I don’t regret it one bit.

Afterward, we walked through the basilica, visited the gift shops, and picked up rosaries and holy water. One of the highlights of the day was getting a blessing for our whole family while inside St. Peter’s. Such a beautiful experience all around.

We started the day with croissants and coffee and didn’t get back home until the evening, but it was so worth it.

Rome Recap

We started the morning with a guided tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum. It was hot, but thankfully we had our umbrellas and used them as shade. Definitely not a stroller-friendly spot, so in a way, losing our stroller kind of worked out. We had the carriers and made it through all the cobblestone paths just fine.

The kids actually did really well during the tour. No meltdowns, no fussing, just curious little travelers taking it all in. After the tour, we snapped some family pics and then made our way to the Trevi Fountain. It started to rain a little, which honestly helped with the crowd. Still packed, but not as bad.

Both Emy and Koa got to throw a coin in, which was super sweet. After that, we visited the Pantheon. We had a short tour booked and walked around inside. It was really cool to see in person and didn’t take too long.

We rode the Metro a bit that day too. I kept my purse zipped up tight, had a cardigan over it, and the diaper bag had a combo lock. I felt safe, but definitely stayed alert, especially in the busy areas.

Also, I really wished I had brought an extra pair of tennis shoes that day. I packed a second pair of sandals instead, but after all that walking, I’ve learned next time to rotate between sneakers.

And of course, more gelato. I think it became a daily thing at that point.

Catching up on our first full day exploring Rome. This was a few weeks ago, but I’ve been slowly going through all the photos and wanted to share some of our favorite moments.

We started at the Spanish Steps, made our way to the Mouth of Truth (after realizing we were at the wrong statue at first), and then walked over to the Aventine Keyhole. The line was way too long, so we skipped it, but we did see the doors from a distance. Right by there, we stopped at the Giardino degli Aranci, where you get that beautiful view of St. Peter’s Basilica in the distance.

Later, we explored Piazza Navona, and then on our way back to the Airbnb before JeLisa and Bill arrived, we saw a long line of people waiting to see Pope Francis being carried to the church where he wished to be buried. We didn’t stay or wait, but we knew what was happening and that he was about to pass by.

Once JeLisa and Bill got in that afternoon, we all went to grab some pizza and pasta, then made our way to the Villa Borghese Gardens.

There was a lot of walking. A lot of stairs. And since the airline lost our stroller, we were carrying the kids on our backs the whole time.

It was a long day, but such a good one. More little recaps coming soon.
