How to Wash & Style Curly/Wavy Hair Upside Down (Without Wonky Curls!)

Tip #1: Rotate your head from side to side while washing and styling. This helps lift your roots and prevents flat or “wonky” sections in the back.

Tip #2: Shake your hair before scrunching. This encourages your curls/waves to form in their natural direction, reducing frizz and uneven curl clumps.

Perfect for anyone with wavy hair, curly hair, or learning the upside-down wash routine.

How I wash & style when upside down

TIP #1: Rotate your head from side to side, lifting at the root, to avoid wonky sections in the back.

TIP #2: Shake your hair before scrunching. This will help your hair curl in its natural direction, creating less wonky curls from scrunching.

How I make my wavy curls last for DAYSSSS ✨

This has been my go-to sleep routine for months and is easily the biggest game changer for my hair this year.

Improper sleep protection will always kill the waves 😭

Tip: for looser textures, make sure your hair is wet but NOT soaking when styling with this brush. If it's too wet, the clumps will stick together and not remain separated. This separation is what creates the volume

For bigger clumps, check out the Bounce Curl DEFINE EdgeLift brush tagged below under “similar” products. The side grooves are further apart on the Define brush.

I’ve also tagged the bounce curl cream as an alternative to the leave-in I show here. You’ll see that I most often use the cream over the leave-in, but never both as it would be too heavy for my hair type.

*please note the importance of using an alcohol-free hairspray on wet or damp hair. Using something WITH alcohol can dry out and damage the hair.

➰ It challenges perfectionism - straightening creates control, but wavy hair rarely dries the same way twice. That’s part of its beauty.

Styling for LOOSE beach waves 🌊

Does the viral bounce curl brush actually work on looser curl patterns?

For me - yes! My mostly 2c hair loves this brush. I’ve found the trick is to apply product to wet hair (NOT soaking) and then brush to distribute the product, smooth wet frizz and form curl clumps. This gives me the BEST definition with minimal frizz.
