You know that saying “hurt people hurt people”? Well, it’s true. Seeing other people’s humanity isn’t possible if you don’t first see your own. We live in a society taught to detach from our own self-worth, our needs, our humanity. Learning the art of self love is where we start to rebuild. True self love. Not narcissism disguised as self love. But true acceptance for the perfectly imperfect creatures that we are. When we can love ourselves in such a gentle way, we are finally able to extend that graciousness beyond ourselves and see humanity all around us. Humanity in loved ones, friends, neighbors and even complete strangers.

If you’re feeling frozen and don’t know where to start right now…first of all, take action in whatever way feels authentic to you. Something is better than nothing. Secondly, travel inward. Work on your own heart. It’s not selfish. You are building a solid foundation for this world to be rebuild upon.

A wise person once told me that worrying is suffering twice. That hit pretty hard. We spend so much of our lives catastrophizing things that will likely never happen. That means constantly living in a state of fight, flight or freeze even when theres no threat. Letting go of worry is a constant practice of trusting that things will always find a way of working out. It might not always feel like it, but we always find a way to the other side.

Putting my yoga teacher hat on to tell you that 5 minutes with your legs up the wall will do wonders for your nervous system. It helps stimulate the vagus nerve which takes you out of “fight or flight” and into “rest and digest”. This reduces heart rate, blood pressure, improves sleep and even helps with mental clarity.

Quick fit check yesterday before we hosted family for the day. I’m at the point in the holiday season that I’m ready to kick back in my pajamas for a few days. My favorite outfit recipe lately for creating a secret pajama look is as simple as a pair of comfy athleisure style bottoms with an oversized sweater. As a recovering people pleaser, I’ve spent years of my life agonizing over what people think about me. The game changing statement for me was that it’s none of my business what people think of me. If they have a problem, it’s generally their own shadow work to do, not yours. This doesn’t mean that the rules of consideration go out the window. A huge part of building strong relationships is hearing each other out and making micro maneuvers to meet each other in the middle.
But that stuff people say about you behind your back, none of your business. The sooner we stop assuming the worst, the quicker we find peace in our relationships and confidence in ourselves and who we are.

There’s so much sweetness in giving yourself space to evolve as your journey unfolds. It’s always going to be difficult for others to see you in any way other than how they’ve known or decided you to be. It took me a long time to realize that my desire to not “fit into the box” society created for me was actually one of my greatest gifts.
