As beautiful as a nearby tree lined street is, its heavy canopy of trees frequently knocks our power out when it storms.

Losing power is no doubt inconvenient, but I’ve made it a priority to find lighting solutions that are as functional as they are beautiful. I needed a dependable way to light our home during outages without constantly burning through expensive real candles or buying endless packs of batteries.

These rechargeable taper candles have been a complete game-changer. Don’t throw away your dry, brittle wicker planters! After battling the harsh winter and late freezing winds this year, my baskets were looking rough. This Mother’s Day weekend, I am giving mine a total refresh using a pro tip from a phenomenal furniture maker.
Here is his expert, time-saving method using Pure Tung Oil (you can also use Linseed Oil for this!):

1️⃣ Use a Microfiber Cloth: Skip the brushes and the mess. Just wipe the oil over the exterior of the wicker with a microfiber cloth.

2️⃣ Don’t Obsess Over the Crevices: You do not need to spend hours trying to get into every single tiny square inch of the weave. Wicker is highly porous. Once applied to the surface, the wood naturally absorbs and wicks the oil deep into the fibers on its own!

3️⃣ Keep it Thin: Apply a thin layer so it doesn’t pool. If it goes on too thick, it will dry tacky and gummy.

4️⃣ The “Super Brutal” Rule: If your wicker is exceptionally dry and drinks the oil up instantly, let it sit for 24 hours and apply a second thin coat to fully lock in the protection.
The immediate visual change might be minimal, but the longevity it adds to your wicker is massive! You are deeply conditioning the fibers so they can battle the outdoor elements for seasons to come. Now my planters are beautifully revived and styled with deep purple petunias and miniature daisies! 💜🌼

🛑 Safety Note: Whether using tung or linseed oil, always lay your used microfiber cloths completely flat outside to dry before throwing them away. As these oils dry, they generate heat and can pose a fire hazard if bunched up in the trash!

ALL TIME FAVORITE OUTDOOR LIGHT FIXTURE!!!!

I have had zero regrets adding these gas lanterns to our build. I was worried that they would be a problem blowing out and ordered with the windguards. In nearly three years only once has one blown out and we have very strong winds frequently! The atmosphere they give is just what I had hoped for. They are a bit of an investment, but for the impact, it is completely worth it!!!

How we stopped waiting and started the project!

If you are waiting for the perfect day to start - the one where you feel like an expert and your hair stays in place - you’ll be waiting forever.

The fear of messing up caused my husband and I to repeatedly procrastinate projects we truly cared about. We finally realized that life is too short and too busy to wait until we’ve been “infused” with a how to do everything guide.

We decided to just jump in, messy windblown saw hair and all.

The takeaway is that the pantry, the kitchen garden, the bookshelf, the mirror for the half bath wouldn’t exist if we didn’t push past our fear of failure. You don’t need to be a pro to create a home you love.

Sometimes you just have to pick up the tools and start.

I used to shop for plants the same way I’d shop for anything else—just picking what I liked in the moment.

Individually, everything was beautiful… but together, it was a bit overstimulating.

Over time, I started approaching our garden differently. Instead of choosing plants one by one, I began working from a simple color palette inspired by our home’s soft green-gray exterior.

Purples became a natural contrast to the green undertone, whites were used to soften and brighten, and layered greens helped everything feel grounded and timeless.

Now I think less about individual plants—and more about how everything works together as one connected space. Even texture and weather, like rain, change how the garden feels in the best way.

It’s a slower, more intentional way to plant—but it’s also more cohesive, and honestly, more cost-effective in the long run.🪻

This space is fully visible from our main living area, which is open to our kitchen and dining room—so I didn’t want to shut this door or treat it like a separate laundry or pantry.

I wanted it to feel like an extension of the home… something beautiful to live with, not something hidden away.

Originally, I planned to simply paint and keep things minimal since the cabinetry color was already set. But when I found this wallpaper, it completely changed the direction in the best way.

Now this laundry room / pantry space feels like a continuation of our kitchen—layered with warmth, texture, and everyday function all in one.

Even simple things like folding laundry or grabbing something from the shelves feel different here.

It’s become one of my favorite examples of designing for how a home actually lives, not just how it looks in a photo.

A $60 antique sewing table was reimagined as a vanity base, paired with a vessel sink.
A $25 mirror, layered in paint and time, was stripped back to reveal its original character.

Together, they added warmth, history, and intentional charm to a very new yet simple space.

It’s proof that you don’t need a big budget to create a collected, timeless feel—just the right pieces.
