Many skincare products, especially those marketed for acne or anti-aging, can quietly break down your skin barrier over time. Harsh exfoliants, retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and even certain “clean” products can strip your skin of the lipids and moisture it needs to stay healthy.

A compromised barrier can show up as redness, itching, sensitivity, flakiness, or that persistent irritation around your mouth that often gets diagnosed as perioral dermatitis. In some cases, it’s not a medical condition. It’s a skin barrier issue that needs to be repaired, not medicated.

Colloidal oatmeal works because it’s rich in beta-glucans and polysaccharides, which act as humectants. They pull moisture into the skin and hold it there. It also contains lipids that help replenish the natural fats in your skin’s barrier, and avenanthramides, which are powerful antioxidants that reduce inflammation and itch.
It’s gentle, pH-balancing, and forms a physical barrier on the skin to protect it while it heals. (2-3x/week for 4-6 weeks)

After the mask, I seal everything in with a combination of aloe and squalane, two ingredients that support barrier function without clogging pores or overwhelming the skin. Aloe adds hydration and has natural anti-inflammatory properties. Squalane mimics the skin’s own oils and helps restore suppleness.

My top recommendation would be to make your own cleaner:
1/2 cup vinegar, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1/2 gallon hot water

If you’re opposed to vinegar then my next recommendation would be to use “pure Castile soap” however if you have hard water then it may leave a white film which you can then use lemon juice or a DIY citric acid cleaner to remove:
1 teaspoon citric acid, 1 cup warm water

My third (and least) recommendation would be Dr. Bronner’s Sal Suds. This will work great on grease and not leave a white film. It doesn’t have fragrances or dyes. BUT it still has sodium lauryl sulfate which can be an endocrine disrupter. So you could use this on grease only and then a gentle cleaner elsewhere (like Branch Basics or Aunt Fannie’s”

The best non-toxic diapers based on:

- No phthalates, dyes, VOC's, PFA's or dioxins
- Absorbency
- Consistent "no rash" reviews
