The shoe styles to wear with barrel jeans.

This is a question I get a lot - particularly as we go into autumn. It can be tricky, but file a few simple rules and there’s lots of styles that will work.

The most important rule is not to wear anything too chunky. It will make the look very bottom heavy and the balance will be all wrong.

When choosing trainers keep them slim and low. No chunky, running styles - just something minimal and non fussy.

The same applies to boots. Keep it close fitting and slim on the ankle to avoid looking clunky and with too much volume at the bottom. A low heel works best and avoid anything with a chunky sole.

Loafers are great with barrel styles - against keep it slim - avoid chunky soles and the look will be well balanced.

Flats are great with barrel styles - ballerinas, Mary Janes, low slingback heels, deck shoes, derby shoes and mules also work perfectly.

The 90s relaxed style is a classic jean. I love this wash (there are loads to pick from) and it’s a great all rounder.
The best selling wide leg style is so flattering and again comes in loads of washes. Great for wearing with trainers or boots into autumn.

This week’s Zara Shortlist takes us nicely into early autumn.

Key colours, light layers, cosy co ords and key trends to bring your autumn wardrobe bang up to date.

This rugby top combines two of the key shades this autumn. Burgundy and blue mixed is a gorgeous combination and this collared knit is super easy to wear and it works with all shades of denim.

This light bomber is a great shape and easy to throw on when things get a bit cooler. Three lovely neutrals to pick from the neckline we’re all looking for at the moment.

Next these relaxed jeans are nice way to get you back into wearing denim. The turn up style is so versatile and you can adjust it to suit your shoe choice. Turn up more for sandals and flats - then turn it down a bit for boots and trainers.

The check shirt is must have this autumn. It’s everywhere and can be worn in a multitude of ways. Personally I love a check shirt tied around the waist - it adds an effortless bit of edge to a simple jeans and tee outfit.

And lastly, it wouldn’t be the ZARA shortlist without a lovely co ord. As we get towards snuggly season, this one is perfect. I’ve given it a try and I can confirm it is seriously comfy.

Fabulous styles for early autumn at John Lewis.
This cropped jacket is everything I love about going into autumn. It comes in a myriad of beautiful shades, it’s soft and cosy and does all the hard work for you (I recently bought it in a beautiful rich wine colour).
We all know I love a blazer and this beautiful check with the subtle pink running through it is a really elevated, heritage style that works perfectly to make your jeans look more sophisticated.
The popover high jacket is achingly cool I love the huge pocket and this effortless neutral.
I know you’ve seen this trench before, but it’s so good. I need to show it to you again two coats for one in such a classic wearable design. Checks are everywhere this awesome and this is super chic.

Styling barrel trousers for autumn.

I’ve had lots of requests for this styling video so I’ve started with a cropped pair as they’re great for late summer. These are great quality, come in lots of colours and are only £26

I’ve added autumn feels to give you some ideas of how to take yours forward into the cooler days.

Warm tones are a great place to start - browns, khakis and creams all work well. Loafers are my autumn shoe of choice (but if I’m honest I’m starting in flip flops for as long as humanly possible 👌🏻)

Layering knits (over the shoulder or round the waist) is a great way to play around with your looks, and longer sleeves or light jackets while it’s still fairly warm.

My Zara is shortlist is back and ready to take you from summer into autumn.

Starting with a statement jacket, red jackets will be everywhere this autumn and this one is a smarter, more elevated version of some of the sportier ones we’ve seen - and the addition of the check makes it really chic.

These khakis are the perfect pairing and this camel shade works with loads of colour combinations. The shape is flattering and this style is perfect for loafers which will gain be key as we move towards autumn.

This cotton knit is a great layer as the days get cooler. It has these lovely design detail details like the rolled hems and drop shoulders - a really good transitional piece.

And finally the unexpected must have at the moment – the long sleeve tee. The wide sleeves and slightly oversize fit are the details to look for and this one nails it. These can be worn in so many different ways - mix with something smarter like a satin slip skirt or satin trousers for the perfect high-low feel.

Here’s a few of the hot weather looks I’ve been wearing this week.

Linen is key in my summer wardrobe - I’ll wear it with jeans once it cools down - shirts are a particular favourite.

This lovely Linen skirt has a tie to the side and is currently half price.

I’ve added richer colours, texture and jewellery to simple looks to give them some interest and mix it up a little. When your looks are built on a wardrobe of minimal, unfussy pieces, it makes it simpler to find new combinations and you can personalise your outfits with accessories that make them entirely yours.
