You don’t have to settle for mass produced art. And you don’t have to spend a lot either.

In fact, you can add art to your walls FOR FREE. Yep. Free.

Now while I’ll always advocate for buying originals and prints from artists, sometimes it’s not in the budget or you need a place holder until you find something you love. Enter these two tricks for free art!

The first trick is to download free, public domain art from the National gallery. You can print famous works right at home (dirty little secret: art print shops use these free works of art and then sell them to you too!)

The second trick is to use an app called Waterlogue (they don’t know me, I just love the app!). It turns your own photos in to water color look alikes!

Listen. I know that might sound out of reach and expensive. I know that might sound frustrating to not just get something “off the shelf” right away to fill a space. But 👏🏼trust👏🏼me 👏🏼. Finding art that is made by an artist is ✨WHERE IT’S AT✨

That doesn’t mean you have to spend tons of money! *Artist sell originals AND prints, which are immediately more affordable.
*Some artist sell art as a hobby for lower prices.
*You can also find art curated from artist from small businesses, which again means it’s easier on your wallet.
*And let’s not forget Etsy, thrifting, estate sales, and marketplace
*lastly, if nothing else, look for free downloads from works available for public domain.

Does that mean I won’t ever buy art from a big box store? Nope. I have some really cheap Amazon prints hanging on my walls right now (and I LOVE them).

BUT. I will always hunt for prints, downloads, and originals from people making art. WHY? Because there is something so special about holding and enjoying something that someone poured beauty and care into!

BUT. You can absolutely do a gallery wall wrong. No plan? Cluttered. No curation? Distracting. Too many color palettes? Overwhelming. Word art? Dated.

Follow these tips for doing it right! If you have a big blank wall, a gallery wall is a beautiful way to affordable give a room visual interest. It literally works for any budget (seriously!) and is basically your very own art installation. Bonus: you can change it out seasonally or update it as you find pieces you love!

Not every DIY has to mean wall trim and tools and big projects. Sometimes the easiest and most do-able way to add beauty and interest to your home (not to mention most affordable!) is a gallery wall.

It’s my go-to trick when I need to easily fill a space. Sometimes it’s a temporary trick. Sometimes it’s my permanent art installation.

The path through DIY is rarely straight but it doesn’t mean you need a complete work shop or all the know how. DIY can be installation by something pre-built and making it work for you and your situation.

My little mudroom bench was all about pivoting from the start! But the end result 👏🏼delivered!👏🏼 There was some “from scratch” building, some hacking, some custom purchased (please someone else build it for me!) elements, and some creativity to put it together.

Do you love an easy DIY?

Static cling window film is perfect for adding some privacy while preserving natural light. I used Artscape, but there’s tons of options out there and Etsy is a great place to look too.

Here’s the other supplies:
➡️ spray bottle
➡️dish soap
➡️ squeegee
➡️box knife

I also grabbed a cutting board and a t-square but you could use a ruler or other straight edge too.

I created a template since I was making the same size of each window. Use a couple drops of dish soap in your spray bottle. Spray the glass (make sure it’s super clean first), peel off the backing, and apply the smooth side to the glass. It’s completely reposition-able and removable - with no damage or residue. I love that it’s renter friendly or a permanent solution!

To sum it up, I find my frames all over the place, but here’s my main sources:

*Amazon - not all frames are created equal, but I’ve found a couple of good shops that sell affordable, quality frames
*Target - often includes a mat, which is a bonus!
*Hobby Lobby or Michael’s - the variety is excellent, but be picky and look for the solid wood ones
*Ikea - good for sleek and modern frames or poster art
*Thrifted or clearance stores - don’t sleep on this! I always check thrift stores or clearance stores (TJ Maxx, Home Goods, Ross, etc) for frames. Even if it’s the ugliest frame, you can paint it or Rub ‘n Buff!
