We see this every single day with our clients. Your body changed—whether it’s 10 pounds, hormones, aging, life—and suddenly your closet doesn’t feel like home anymore.

Nothing fits the way it used to. The jeans don’t sit right. You feel frumpy in clothes you once loved. Getting dressed stops being fun and starts being frustrating.

And here’s what we know as personal stylists who are also women over 40: you don’t have to keep dressing the body you used to have.

If your closet feels disconnected from the body you have today, here’s where we’d start:

1. Stop using fit as a judgment.
If something no longer fits comfortably, that’s information—not a reason to be hard on yourself.

2. Edit what isn’t serving you now.
Move out the pieces that don’t fit, don’t flatter or consistently make you feel bad when you put them on.

3. Pay attention to what DOES feel good.
Notice the silhouettes, rises, lengths and proportions you reach for now—not the ones you loved five or ten years ago.

4. Identify the actual gaps.
Before you start shopping, figure out what’s missing from the wardrobe you need for your life today.

5. Rebuild intentionally.
You don’t need an entirely new closet overnight. Start with a few pieces that fit beautifully, work together and make getting dressed easier.

Your closet should celebrate who you are in this season of your life—not constantly remind you of who you used to be.

Here’s the thing I wish more women knew: Having “nothing to wear” usually has very little to do with how many clothes you own.

I see it every week. A closet can be FULL and still not function.

You might have plenty of individual pieces you love—but not enough pieces that work together.

You might own 15 great tops—but only two bottoms you actually feel good wearing.

You might have beautiful clothes—but they belong to a lifestyle you’re not really living anymore.

Or you might simply have never taken the time to turn all those individual pieces into actual outfits.

And THAT is why adding another random cute top usually doesn’t solve the problem.

So the next time you’re standing in front of your closet thinking, “I have nothing to wear,” don’t immediately ask yourself what you need to buy.

Instead, ask:
→ What am I actually wearing on repeat?
→ Which pieces do I love but never seem to wear—and WHY?
→ Do I have enough pieces that actually work together?
→ What could I style differently with what I already own?
→ Is there one specific missing piece that would make several things in my closet more wearable?

That last question is especially important. Because there’s a big difference between buying something because it’s cute and buying something because it solves a problem in your wardrobe.

The goal isn’t a closet full of clothes.

It’s a closet full of outfits.

And the second one is what makes getting dressed easy. 🤍

Here’s my hot take: If an outfit looks “off,” it doesn’t necessarily mean you picked the wrong clothes.

And you probably don’t need to take everything off and start over. 🙃

After years of styling women, I can tell you that sometimes the difference between an outfit that feels wrong and one that just WORKS is one small change.

A different shoe.

A little tuck.

Removing the jacket.

Changing the proportion of the top.

Adding a belt.

That’s it.

We’ve somehow convinced ourselves that if an outfit doesn’t immediately come together, we need a completely different outfit.

But good styling isn’t always about finding better pieces. A lot of the time, it’s about knowing how to adjust the pieces you already have.

So before you change your top for the third time, stop.

Change ONE thing. Then look again.

So the next time you’re editing your closet and the price tag is the only reason you’re hesitating, ask yourself:

→ Would I choose to wear this today?
→ Does it fit my body AND my life right now?
→ Can I easily think of an outfit I’d wear it with?
→ If I saw it in a store today, would I buy it again?

If the answer keeps coming back no, that tells you something.

Sometimes the most expensive pieces in our closets teach us the best lessons about what we actually wear—and that information can make you a much smarter shopper going forward.

• You hope that someday they'll magically fit
• You remember loving the IDEA of them
• You feel like you're "giving up" if you let them go

But here's what's actually happening: every time you open your closet, you see pieces that don't work for your body. And that's a daily reminder that your closet isn't serving you.

Stop trying to force pieces to work. Stop waiting for your body to change to fit the clothes. Stop keeping things out of guilt.

You don’t need sky-high heels to elongate your legs— you just need smart styling.

1) Go high-rise. High-waisted pants or skirts visually lenghten your frame instantly.
2) Monochrome Magic. Wearing one color from top to bottom keeps the eye moving, creating a seamless line.
3) Pointed toes or nude tones. Both give the illusion of extra inches without sacrificing comfort.

Longer-looking legs, no heels required.

You know the closet is full.

And yet… somehow, by Thursday, you’ve worn some version of the same five outfits again. 😂

Yep. I said cheaper. 👀

Because the number on the price tag doesn’t tell you what something will actually cost you.

Let’s say you buy a $300 jacket and wear it 100 times.

$3 per wear.

Now take that $40 top you bought because it was “such a good deal”—but you only wore it once before deciding you didn’t really love the fit.

$40 per wear.

Suddenly that $300 jacket doesn’t sound quite so expensive, does it?

This is cost per wear, and it’s one of my favorite ways to think about whether something is actually worth buying.

Before I invest in a piece, I want to know:
→ Will I wear it regularly?
→ Can I style it multiple ways?
→ Does it work with pieces I already own?
→ Is the quality good enough to hold up?
→ Will I still want to wear it a year from now?

Because as a personal stylist, I don’t think the goal is to spend MORE on clothes.

The goal is to spend BETTER.

Our client wasn't even home — her husband let us in and we got to work. That's just how it goes sometimes. 😄

Dana and I have started tag-teaming styling sessions together, and honestly it's a game changer. Getting dressed used to feel easy. You knew what worked. You felt like yourself in your clothes.

But somewhere along the way, that changed.

Maybe your body changed. Your lifestyle changed. Your priorities changed. Or maybe you’ve spent so long dressing for your job, your age, trends or everyone else’s expectations that you’ve lost sight of what you actually like.

We see this with clients all the time.

If your closet doesn’t feel like you anymore, here’s where we’d start:

1. Identify what still feels like you.
Pull out 3–5 pieces you genuinely love wearing. What do they have in common? Think color, silhouette, fit, fabric and overall vibe.

2. Pay attention to what doesn’t.
Notice the pieces you consistently skip over—and ask yourself why. Too fussy? Too conservative? Too trendy? Just not your personality?

3. Dress for your actual life.
Your wardrobe should support how you spend your time now, not the lifestyle you used to have—or the one you think you’re supposed to have.

4. Give yourself permission to evolve.
You don’t have to dress the way you did at 30, 35 or even five years ago. Keep what still feels right and let yourself move on from what doesn’t.

Your style should be a reflection of who you are now—not who you think you need to be.

And sometimes rediscovering your style isn’t about buying anything new. It starts with getting curious about what makes you feel most like yourself. 🤍
