Here's what changed everything for me (and what we now teach our clients):

Before you buy ANYTHING, ask: "What will I wear this with?" If you can't immediately think of 3 outfits using pieces you already own, put it back. This one question eliminates 90% of regret purchases.

Shop for your actual life, not your aspirational one. That cocktail dress? Beautiful. But if you go to one event a year, it's not a smart buy. Shop for the life you're living TODAY.

Know your gaps before you shop. Go into stores with a purpose. "I need black pants that work for work" is intentional. "Just browsing" is how you end up with random pieces that don't fit into your wardrobe.
