It was beautifully written and a story of love and redemption and imagination. It’s a story of a grandmother’s love, bringing joy and comfort to her granddaughter’s life, even after death. It’s a story of humanity, of imperfections, vulnerabilities and triumphs. I sat and read some of the reviews on Goodreads about this book today, and saw so many people hating on this book, claiming they wanted more Ove. If you’ve read anything by Backman, you know that each story is so different and you won’t get the same feeling twice. Perhaps this book meant so much to me because my grandfather, who passed just this last month, was my version of this grandmother. Someone who wanted to bring imagination and joy to my childhood. Perhaps I loved this book so much because I had that person, and maybe these people didn’t—I don’t know. This is a tough story of grief and loss and love, but I truly think that if you have lost someone who brought joy into your life, this would be the perfect book to read and cry over while remembering your person.
