Our backyard felt so unfinished… and it was honestly just because it felt so exposed!🫣 We didn’t need a full fence, just something that added a little privacy without closing everything in. This simple slatted wall ended up making the biggest difference. If you’re thinking about building one, here’s exactly what to do: Step 1: Set your posts • Dig holes about 1/3 of the post height • Set posts in concrete • If your ground freezes, go below your frost line so they don’t shift Step 2: Let everything set • Let the concrete cure fully • Double check posts are straight before moving on Step 3: Choose your materials wisely • Use pressure-treated wood to prevent warping and rot • Lasts longer and saves money over time • Use a post hole digger instead of an auger to save money • Rip down 1x6 boards into slats if you want a cheaper option Step 4: Start building • Make sure your first board is level • Everything builds off this Step 5: Keep spacing consistent • Use a scrap piece of wood as a spacer • This keeps all your gaps clean and even Step 6: Think through the design • Leave small gaps between slats • Allows airflow while still giving privacy Step 7: Finishing details • Paint posts Tricorn Black for a clean look • Stain your slats before installing • Trust me, it is way easier than reaching between boards later 😅 • Use galvanized nails so they don’t rust over time! We built this in 2022 and it still looks the same today. It has held up really well through weather and wind, and it is easily one of our favorite projects we have done.
