I get asked all the time...how do you mix patterns and while I donā€™t have a ā€œformulaā€ for it. These are a few foundational tips that I come back to every time: ā€¢ Start classic. A medium-scale floral paired with a medium-scale stripe is always a safe, beautiful foundation. The colors on this donā€™t even have to match! ā€¢ Play with scale. Mix a small gingham print, with a bold block print, and a medium floral print to create balance and visual interest. Color cohesion is important here; you want them to feel like they are ā€œrelatedā€ but NOT closely related! ā€¢ Repeat a pattern in different colors. Using the same motif (in my case...gingham) in different colors keeps things cohesive without feeling too matchy. ā€¢ Add a pause. A solid fabric gives the eye a place to rest and lets your patterns shine. Over the years, Iā€™m always asked about our trimā€¦ Is it original? What paint did you use? What stain matches it best? The trim in our home is original to our 1920s Craftsman, but if youā€™re trying to recreate that same timeless, traditional look, the closest match weā€™ve found is Early American by Minwax. Itā€™s warm, classic, and has that old-home depth that never feels trendy. Even though the Pink Room naturally feels like it was made for Valentineā€™s Day, it felt right to lean in and add a few extra touches of whimsy, pink, and red. These scalloped polka dot sheets were the starting point for this mini refresh, and when I found the pink gingham Valentineā€™s Day lumbar pillows, it truly felt like a little textile dream. Everything else is bedding Iā€™ve collected over the years. I simply swapped a few duvet covers and mixed and matched pillowcases. One of my favorite things is getting to shop our own linen closet.
