Prerequisite: one bad month of reach and the panic that followed. Your Algorithm Exit Plan Lesson One Can we all agree to normalize talking about how terrifying it is to have your income attached to a number you do not control…aka your monthly reach and followers on Instagram? That’s why we’re making Substack our Algorithm Exit Plan. Here’s the structural difference: On Instagram you audition every single day for reach that hopefully brings in followers and we cannot ignore the stress of posting a paid collab and holding your breath to see if it gets a lower reach than you’re used to getting on an organic post. On Substack, when someone subscribes, the post lands in her inbox whether or not any algorithm feels like landing you on the right side of the internet. I became a top 100 rising paid writer in fashion and beauty seven times in my first year over there, and this year the goal is to match what I make in partnerships on Instagram. I’m documenting the whole thing. Your homework: create your Substack account, nail down your content pillars, post a Substack note (even if you’ve never posted a Substack article before) and let me know what’s stopping you from making your first Substack post. Class dismissed. Substack for creators, algorithm exit plan, creator income, brand partnerships, Substack growth, full time creator
