I find myself constantly coaching the kids when they ride bikes while I’m running. My daily runs are when I reflect or clear my head, so naturally I’ve thought how these things I say to the kids parallel life lessons.
Where are your eyes?
You shouldn’t be looking at your feet. Yes, the ground is tough or rocky/slippery, but you should be planning your route, not focused on how difficult it is, or the possibility of falling or getting hurt. Will you stumble? Probably. But you shouldn’t let the fear of getting hurt stop you from moving forward.
Your focus should be on your route, not on the people around you. Everyone is on their own path, and their route has nothing to do with yours. You don’t know how long they’ve been going or where they’ve come from. Keep your eyes forward.
If someone passes you, congratulate them on their hard work and don’t get discouraged that someone might be better than you. Use that as fuel to work harder.
If someone has a nicer or newer bike, good for them! They probably worked really hard to get it. Appreciate the fact that you HAVE a bike. Life isn’t fair. Work harder.
When it gets difficult, don’t say you can’t do it. Change the way you use your words- it’s not that you can’t do it, you need to ask for help, or simply admit it’s hard and push through the pain. Some parts of our journey we need a hand to get through, and that doesn’t make you any weaker of a person.
It’s ok to slow down. Listen to your body. Sometimes resting will give you more energy to finish strong.
Focus on your goal. Remind yourself why you started in the first place. Don’t look backwards, unless it’s to pause and reflect on how far you’ve gone, and appreciate the beauty of the journey.
What other lessons have you learned in life? Share with me!
Also, this is my favorite outdoor cold weather running outfit. My leggings are less than $30, and this beanie (I bought for $50!) is on sale for only $16! It’s a fantastic Christmas gift for anyone.
