We’ve been dreaming about more space up here, and it’s finally starting to take shape. The dormers went from bare framing to fresh drywall, and now Evan and Hazel are helping pick colors for some fun accent walls in their rooms (big decisions when you’re 6 and 3!). This coming week we’ll wrap up spackling, priming, and painting. Then it’s on to flooring, trim, light fixtures, and those last little details that make it feel complete. Outside, the roofing is ready and the siding is on the way — piece by piece, this project is moving forward. It finally feels like the finish line is in sight, at least on the inside. Six weeks in the living room… all for this moment. ✨

Late nights, paint clothes, and a lot of tape later… Hazel’s checkered wall is done. She picked Deep Mauve by Benjamin Moore for the color, and the checkers are a little nod to the theme she chose (I’ll save the full reveal for later 💕).

I’ve kept Fossil (BM) running through the dormers — it feels calm and soft, not stark, but still clean and bright. Nugget curled up on the floor while we pulled the tape, Nala found her perfect sun spot on the trailer, Gryffin wandered around proud with his empty beer bottle, and Kyle kept things moving outside.

We’re tired, but the finishes are going in — flooring, trim, all the details — and we’re finally in the homestretch. Thought we’d have the kids moved in this weekend, but it’s looking like mid-week instead. Either way, we’re close ✨

I pulled together three different design ideas for the boys’ room, each with its own vibe.

First up is Vintage Explorer — maps, plaid, and that old-world adventure feel.

Then Modern Industrial — darker tones, metal details, and some really cool engine prints, because Evan loves anything mechanical.

And Rad Racing — bold red, checkerboard, and all the car artwork… because like most boys, Evan is all about cars.

Just like Hazel’s room, we’re keeping the same beds and dresser — hand-me-downs from my brother and my dad. No need to replace everything when we can work with what we already have. A new rug, fresh paint, and some fun accents can totally transform the space.

Evan’s already picked his favorite — and since Gryffin’s still too little to weigh in, his big brother made the call. Which one do you think he chose?

I thought I knew which design Hazel would choose… turns out I was wrong 👀 But when I asked Evan which one he thought she’d like, he actually guessed the right one (still amazed by that).

I pulled together three different design ideas for Hazel’s room just to see what direction we might go in.

There’s Moody Vintage with darker tones and a cozy patterned rug.

Rad Girl with checkerboard bedding and bold art.

And Groovy Flower with big floral accents and a colorful rainbow rug.

For all three, I kept the bed and dresser the same. The bed is hers already and the dresser has been in the family for generations. No sense in blowing money on all new furniture when we can work with what we have.

A fresh rug, new paint, and a few accent pieces can completely change the vibe without starting from scratch.

The past couple weeks have been a blur — Maine, back-to-school chaos, an 8-hour drive to Cape May for Labor Day camping… and now we’re back home, exhausted.

The kids are still sleeping in the living room because the dormers aren’t finished, every night feels like a never-ending slumber party, and I’ve officially set a deadline of Oct 3 (because I need to watch the new season of Monster in peace - and not traumatize my kids).

Workouts + nutrition have slipped, energy is low, and while it might look like Kyle and I are doing a lot… the truth is we’re tired, stressed, and just figuring it out like everyone else.

The highlight reel doesn’t show the laundry piles, the late nights, the arguments, or the “what’s for dinner?” panic at 5pm. Things are messy and imperfect behind the scenes — and I want to be honest about that.

Because life isn’t perfect. And that’s okay.

Picking up where we left off at Seawall: that same night at high tide, the waves were putting on a full show. The kids were wide-eyed, the sunset was unreal, and of course, we left damp because apparently no one in our family can watch the ocean without wearing some of it home.

From there, we made it to Thunder Hole at high tide — and yes, it really does sound like thunder. (Also yes, we got wet again. Sensing a theme here?)

We hiked the Bowl Trail, skirting around the Beehive, which gave us some incredible views without having to risk our lives climbing cliffs with three kids in tow. Then we struck gold at a restaurant that had raw oysters for us and a kids’ menu — rare, magical, and everyone ate without complaint. A true Acadia miracle.

We stepped back in time at the Carroll Homestead, then checked out Schoodic Point where the waves were on another level — dramatic, crashing, and worth every second. Like true New Englanders, we also made the pilgrimage to the L.L. Bean outlet because… tradition.

The Sea Princess cruise promised seals; we got a brief cameo from two of them before they disappeared like, “That’s enough for today.” Luckily the ride itself was still beautiful, so we’ll call it a win.

Now we’re on our way home: dreaming of real showers, facing a mountain of laundry that should honestly count as its own hike, returning to a house mid-dormer renovation, and oh yeah — school starts Monday. Because why ease back in when you can dive straight into chaos?

Acadia, you gave us snails, thunder, oysters, waves, seals (kind of), and memories we’ll be laughing about for a long time. Family of five: survived and thriving… mostly 🌊🦪🦭

Halfway through our week in Acadia and we’ve already packed in enough adventures (and laundry) to last a month.

We’ve gone tide pooling in Southwest Harbor and Bar Harbor where we found approximately one million snails, kept our eyes peeled for crabs, and spotted one live one (a major win) along with a few fascinating dead ones — which the kids thought were just as exciting. At Seawall, we caught sunset and high tide — and also got absolutely soaked when we weren’t planning on it. So now we’re traveling with a collection of dry-but-crusty saltwater clothes. Delightful.

Our ‘hikes’ so far have been short enough to technically count as walks… but we’re branding them as hikes anyway, because parenting is 50% re-labeling reality. Jordan Pond Restaurant came through with the legendary popovers + tea — honestly delicious — but we spent the whole meal trying to outmaneuver bees that were obsessed with our strawberry jam, lemonade, and tea. (They were relentless.)

Campfires in the mornings and evenings have been the highlight — equal parts marshmallow sticky and coffee necessary — and the kids are so tired that car naps have basically become a core activity.

Still ahead: a seals + fjords cruise, the Ocean Path hike to see Thunder Hole at high tide (because apparently the ocean yelling is a tourist attraction), and maybe even the Beehive summit if the stars align… and if we don’t run out of snacks.

So far, this first trip as a family of five has been equal parts chaos, magic, and a little bit of salt crust. 🌊🔥🐚
