It’s not often I run “fast” anymore. Slower easier miles sort of just come with ultra running. That being said, it means those hard, quick miles hurt. It’s a much different pain than the pain of being tired and sore 20 hours into an ultramarathon. Hammering as hard as you can redlining your body and heart rate for as long as you and it screaming at you every second to stop, but you just keep holding on for a few more seconds. It’s a different type of mental training than running for hours on end. The moment you give in and let up, you feel fine again, just reinforcing that you could have kept going. The brain and body learns to deal with that pain a little bit more every time they experience it. I’m not the fastest tool in the shed, but the final 6:20/mile worked me harder than any of my recent races. A good reminder of how amazing running is and how the body adapts and overcomes.
